Auto Retail September 2026: India Posts Best-Ever September

September 2026 is the best September on record for Indian auto retail, though FADA says last year's GST wait flatters the growth. Mahindra moved into second place, and dealers are holding heavy stock.

  • Passenger vehicle (PV) retail registrations reached 4,27,213 units, up 32.10% year-on-year and 6.17% on August, according to FADA.

  • FADA says the yearly jump is inflated, because buyers held back in September 2025 while waiting for GST 2.0.

India's showrooms had their best September ever, but the headline number needs context. FADA counts retail registrations, not factory dispatches. Across all vehicle categories, retail stood at 25,36,920 units, up 31.82% on last year and 4.69% on August.

September 2026 Sets a New Retail Record

PV retail climbed from 3,23,391 units in September 2025 and 4,02,398 in August 2026. Growth was almost identical in cities and villages: urban retail rose 32.11% and rural 32.09%.

Over April to September FY27, PV retail totalled 25,44,187 units, up 24.48% from 20,43,813.

What Drove the Growth?

Mostly last year's weak base. FADA says buyers delayed purchases in September 2025 while waiting for GST 2.0, which makes this year's comparison look unusually strong.

FADA adds two more points. The festive calendar is later this year, and Pitru Paksha pushed some deliveries into October.

The research backs this up with a simple calculation: September's 4,27,213 units are only about 1% above the April to August monthly average of about 4,23,400. So the 32% jump is mostly a weak base, not a sudden surge in demand.

How Different Vehicle Segments Performed

Passenger vehicles: Maruti Suzuki led with 1,69,132 units and a 39.59% share. Mahindra moved to second with 57,343 units, just 89 ahead of Tata's 57,254. FADA does not say why, so we won't guess. Maruti grew 30.05% but lost 0.62 points of share, because the overall market grew faster at 32.10%.

Fuel mix: Petrol/ethanol held 41.27% of PV retail, while CNG, hybrid and EV combined made up 41.00%. Alternative fuels had overtaken petrol for the first time in August, and petrol edged back by a small margin. A year ago the gap was wide, with petrol at 47.18% and alternative fuels at 35.06%. EVs reached an 8.45% share and hybrids 9.44%.

Commercial vehicles: CV retail reached 1,03,557 units, up 37.62%, the first September above one lakh. Heavy commercial vehicles led with 32,310 units, up 46.22%. Dealers pointed to GST 2.0 and replacement demand, infrastructure and mining, higher rural incomes, buying ahead of the October price increase, and the half-year close.

What the Numbers Tell Us

The record is real, but the growth rate is not the full picture. The month-on-month rise in all-vehicle retail, 4.69%, is the cleaner signal.

Stock is the other number to watch. PV dealers hold about 43 to 45 days of inventory, up five days from August-end, against FADA's 21-day benchmark. Around 60% of PV dealers hold more stock than before. In practice, that suggests cars are available.

FADA names further price increases as a watch-out for the festive quarter, without naming brands. Dealers remain upbeat: 75.57% expect growth in October, up from 67.09% a month earlier, and 63% say booking pipelines are building.

A Final Word

So largely, yes. September 2026 is the best September on record for India's auto retail, with PV registrations at 4,27,213 units. But much of the 32.10% growth comes from last year's GST wait, not a fresh surge. October, with Navratri running from 11 to 20 October, is the real test of demand, especially with a risk of price hikes.
