BMW is set to introduce the eighth generation of its 5 Series, including the electric i5 variant, in a long-wheelbase (LWB) form in India during the 2024 festive season. Targeted at those who prefer a chauffeur-driven experience, the extended wheelbase will provide more legroom for rear-seat passengers, competing directly with the upcoming long-wheelbase version of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. This will be the first time the 5 Series will be available in India in an extended-wheelbase configuration.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the long-wheelbase 5 Series closely resembles the standard model, retaining signature elements like the BMW kidney grille and sleek tail lamps. However, it distinguishes itself with an illuminated '5' on the C-pillar, glowing white for ICE-powered models, and blue and pulsating for the electric i5 during charging. The LWB variant measures 5,175mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,520mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,105mm - making it about 145mm longer overall than the standard model.
Interior and Range
The interior of the 5 Series and i5 LWB maintains the modern BMW design, featuring a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster for the driver and a 14.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. The rear passenger area stands out with additional legroom from the extended wheelbase, reclining rear seats, four-zone climate control, exclusive quilting on upholstery, and a dual-tone design. Rear passengers are treated to a 31.1-inch 32:9 display that folds down from the headliner, offering entertainment options with 8K resolution and 5G connectivity.
In terms of powertrain options for the Indian market, the 5 Series is expected in 520Li or 530Li with 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engines, respectively, featuring a mild-hybrid system for enhanced efficiency. The i5 is likely to come in eDrive40 form, equipped with a 340hp rear axle-mounted motor driven by an 81.2kWh battery pack, providing a claimed maximum range of 582km. The international market also receives an M60 xDrive variant, boasting a combined 601hp and a maximum range of 516km.
Price
As for pricing, the 5 Series LWB is anticipated to be in the range of Rs 70 lakh to 80 lakh (ex-showroom, India), directly competing with the upcoming long-wheelbase version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The i5 is expected to be priced in the Rs 90 lakh to 1 crore (ex-showroom) region, positioned without direct rivals at the time of its release.
