MG Motors is gearing up to introduce the next-generation ZS EV, which will be branded as the MG ES5. This electric SUV was unveiled at the 2024 Paris Motor Show and is set to debut in European and Chinese markets by mid-2025. For India, the ES5 is expected to arrive by 2026, and local production is being planned to cater to the subcontinent’s growing demand for electric vehicles.
Design Highlights: Familiar but Fresh
The MG ES5 retains much of the recognizable MG SUV design language but comes with modern updates to give it a fresh appeal. Key elements like its stance, front fascia, and tail lamp design maintain the brand’s identity, but new features such as reimagined headlamps, dynamic alloy wheels, and unique daytime running lights (DRLs) bring a modern flair.
The interior of the ES5 promises a minimalistic yet sophisticated layout. It features two large digital screens that take center stage on the dashboard. As seen in MG’s other models like the Windsor EV, most of the vehicle’s controls, including driver functions and cabin adjustments, will be integrated into the touchscreen interface. The initial offering in India will likely be a black over silver color scheme, with additional color options available through accessory packs.
Powertrain and Performance
The MG ES5 will be powered by two battery pack options for the Chinese market: a 49.1kWh battery pack offering a range of 425km and a larger 62.2kWh battery pack providing up to 525km of range. These LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery packs are developed in collaboration with CATL, a battery supplier. The performance of the ES5 is expected to be comparable to the outgoing ZS EV, which is equipped with a front-axle-mounted motor producing 174bhp and 280Nm of torque.
Although the ES5 is set to carry similar powertrain figures, its improved battery range and efficiency will make it an attractive choice for consumers seeking longer journeys on a single charge.
Tech and Features
The MG ES5 is expected to come loaded with high-end features, aligning with the latest advancements in the EV segment. The SUV will offer dual digital displays, level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), wireless phone mirroring, ventilated seats, and powered front seats. Additionally, the ES5 will boast over-the-air (OTA) updates, a 360-degree camera, a HUD (Heads-Up Display), and a full LED light package to enhance both comfort and safety.
Stepping into a New Competitive Landscape
When the MG ES5 hits Indian shores, it will enter a highly competitive EV market. Unlike the ZS EV, which operated in a relatively smaller segment, the ES5 will compete against upcoming electric SUVs like the Maruti eVX, Toyota Urban Sport, Honda Elevate EV, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra XUV.e8, XUV.e9, and the Tata Sierra EV. This means the MG ES5 will face stiffer competition, requiring it to bring its A-game to stand out.
MG Motors is expected to continue leveraging the ZS EV's strong reputation to build momentum for the ES5. With its updated design, advanced features, and competitive pricing, the ES5 has the potential to be a game-changer in India’s burgeoning electric vehicle market.
