The Mercedes-Benz AMG CLE 53 Coupe has been launched in India at Rs 1.35 crore (ex-showroom) and is positioned above the CLE 300 Cabriolet. It slots to take AMG's local portfolio to 10.
With a Rs. 20 lakh premium over its cabriolet sibling, the CLE 53 presents keener performance and more aggressive styling to buyers who want a daily driver sports coupe wearing the badge of the AMG division.
Police Work as Good as the Badge
Powering the CLE 53 Coupe is a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six, with an additional 48V mild-hybrid system, under the bonnet. The output is 449hp and 560Nm of torque, whereby 40Nm more can be released on Overboost.
It is linked to a 9-speed torque converter gearbox and 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, with which the coupe can accelerate to 0-100 kph in only 4.2 seconds. On the menacing side, the top speed is electronically restricted to 250kph or 270kph with optional AMG Performance Package.
Luxury Meets Sport Inside the Cabin
The cabin is mostly the same as the CLE 300 with an 11.9-inch portrait-format infotainment screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument driver display, and the familiar three-speaker central air conditioning vent face.
But, some features unique to AMG are the flat-bottom 3-spoke Alcantara layered steering wheel having red stitches and extra touch buttons. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, premium Burmester sound system, 64-colour ambient lighting, powered seats with memory, wireless charger and head up display are other features.
Competitors and positioning
The BMW M2, with 460hp and 550Nm, on paper, is closest in the performance to the CLE 53. Nonetheless, the AMG comes at a much more expensive Rs 1.35 crores as opposed to the Rs 1.03 crore of the M2. That premium gets you the bonus of space, and technology and all weather performance of an AWD luxury coupe.
