Maruti Wont Be Launching The New Maruti Swift Rs Or Sport In India Heres Why

Maruti won’t be launching the new Maruti Swift RS or Sport in India, here’s why

Maruti Suzuki has recently launched the fourth-generation Swift in India, but unfortunately, performance-oriented versions like the Swift Sport or Swift RS will not be available in the country. According to Partho Banerjee, Maruti Suzuki's sales and marketing head, there are no plans to introduce these variants in India. Overseas, the Suzuki Swift has often had a sportier version.

The previous-generation Swift Sport, for example, featured a 140hp, 1.4-liter turbo-petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology, along with cosmetic and mechanical modifications. While the previous-gen Swift Sport was spotted in India, it was brought for testing by a component maker, not by the brand itself.

In certain markets like New Zealand, it is called the Swift RS and is offered with a 1.0-liter Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine, similar to the one found in India's Baleno RS. People have speculated that Maruti Suzuki could potentially introduce a Swift RS variant by utilizing the localized 1.0L Boosterjet engine.

However, when asked about it, Banerjee stated that the Swift already has a sporty feel and that consumers would not consider an RS variant necessary. Maruti Suzuki may be hesitant to introduce a sportier Swift after the lukewarm response to the Baleno RS, which was released in 2017.

There are additional challenges for introducing the Swift RS in India. Firstly, there is no fourth-generation Swift Sport available in any market yet, and it is unclear when a Sport variant will be introduced for the new model. Furthermore, if a Swift Sport were to be launched in international markets, Maruti Suzuki could potentially import up to 2,500 units without the need for homologation, thanks to the Indian government's policies. For now, Maruti Suzuki is not pursuing either of these options to introduce a sportier version of the Swift in India.

Banerjee believes that the Swift is already well-established and known for its sporty nature, and does not require additional variants. Introducing a sportier version could involve significant costs for homologation and certification, and the market demand may not offset these expenses. Overall, Maruti Suzuki seems focused on the current Swift's appeal, which is already well-received for its sporty DNA, vibrant design, and youthful feel. While a sportier Swift variant may be desirable to some enthusiasts, it seems unlikely to be pursued by the brand for financial and market-related reasons.
