But the Wagon R picked up pace in the subsequent months, especially from January and February 2025, and eventually went on to capture the sales throne for the financial year.
Maruti Suzuki FY2025 Financial Performance
The Wagon R was quite successful on its own. However, sales of Maruti Suzuki's offerings, including compact cars such as the Swift, Dzire, Baleno, etc., declined overall by 7.58 percent year on year. The company sold over 8.96 lakh compact cars in FY2025, down from 9.70 lakh units in FY2024.
For FY2025, Maruti Suzuki’s overall domestic sales reached 17.61 lakh units, reporting a slight gain of 0.05 percent over FY2024. The rural sales increased by 10 percent and rural market share by 3.5 percent, as supported by the expansion of Maruti Suzuki’s dealer network to more than 150 upcountry markets.
WagonR Sales in rural areas nearly matched with urban markets
Wagon R sales were about evenly distributed between urban and rural markets, with urban sales representing 51.8 and rural sales contributing 48.2. However, it is notable that a sizable percentage of the urban sales for the Wagon R, comes from the fleet market.
Conclusion
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R continues to be India's best-selling car for the 4th year in a row indicating that it has not lost its appeal. While the sales figures decreased from previous years, the Wagon R was still able to sell more units than its nearest competitor, Tata Punch, in FY2025. The Wagon R's substantial sales in urban and rural areas, along with the percentage of repeat buyers, shows that it provides value for customers. While Maruti Suzuki has seen an overall decline in compact car segment sales, it still achieved a slight increase in total domestic sales, with rural demand on the rise. Overall, the WagonR's performance and customer loyalty will continue to be a key factor in Maruti Suzuki's accomplishments.
