Maruti Brezza And Fronx Overtake Tata Nexon And Punch Despite 5 Star Safety Ratings A Deeper Look

Maruti Brezza and Fronx Overtake Tata Nexon and Punch Despite 5-Star Safety Ratings: A Deeper Look

In a surprising turn of events, Maruti Suzuki's Brezza and Fronx have overtaken Tata Motors’ popular sub-4m SUVs, the Nexon and Punch, in sales during Q3 2024, despite Tata’s strong safety record. The Nexon and Punch, both rated 5-star by Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP, have dominated the sub-4m SUV segment in the past. However, recent sales data shows Maruti’s offerings leading the segment, which raises questions about changing consumer preferences.

Maruti Surges Ahead in Festive Season Sales

Maruti Suzuki's sub-4m SUV sales, including the Brezza and Fronx, surged to 89,994 units in Q3 2024, compared to Tata’s Nexon and Punch, which together registered 83,136 units. This gives Maruti a lead of 6,858 units over Tata. Even after excluding the sales of the newly launched Maruti Jimny, Brezza and Fronx still have a solid lead of 3,238 units over Nexon and Punch.

One of the key reasons for Maruti’s strong performance could be its larger dealer and service network, which plays a crucial role during India’s festive season. With the festive season traditionally driving higher car sales, Maruti’s expansive reach appears to have given it an edge. Maruti’s Q3 2024 sales are the highest in the last four quarters, whereas Tata’s numbers for the same period are the lowest in the last four quarters.

Competition from New Tata and MG EV Models

Another factor that may have contributed to Nexon’s drop in sales is Tata’s own newly launched EV models. The Tata Curvv EV, launched in September 2024, has already captured nearly 10% market share in the compact SUV segment, with 4,763 units sold in its first month. This shift of attention to the Curvv EV could explain why Nexon’s sales, particularly its EV variant, have been affected.

Additionally, the arrival of the MG Windsor EV, a strong rival to the Nexon EV, has further intensified competition. MG’s Windsor EV, with its unique Battery as a Service (BaaS) ownership program, received an overwhelming response, securing 15,000 bookings in just 24 hours. This new entrant has likely drawn some potential Nexon EV buyers away.

Impact of Mahindra’s XUV3XO and Tata’s After-Sales Service

Mahindra’s recently launched XUV3XO, a refreshed version of the XUV300, has also been gaining traction in the sub-4m SUV space. Its modern features, like a panoramic sunroof and enhanced tech, have led to a significant boost in sales, posing yet another challenge to Tata’s Nexon.

On the after-sales service front, Tata Motors has faced some customer dissatisfaction. In the 2024 Customer Experience Index (CEI) study by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), Tata Motors ranked 9th, trailing behind Maruti Suzuki, which ranked 7th. This disparity in customer service satisfaction could have influenced buyers' decisions.

Conclusion

While Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza and Fronx have overtaken Tata’s Nexon and Punch for now, this may only represent a short-term trend. Factors like the festive season, the rise of Tata’s own Curvv EV, and stiff competition from other brands, have all played a role. However, whether this shift is indicative of a long-term change in consumer preferences remains to be seen. Tata’s 5-star safety rating is still a significant draw, and with future product refreshes, the balance could shift once again.
