Hyundai Motor India officially announced at its Investor Day 2025 event that its luxury brand, Genesis, will debut in India in 2027. In India, this is a significant step for Hyundai's entry into the luxury market.
Genesis to be assembled locally in India
Genesis automobiles will be locally produced in India, in contrast to entirely imported cars (CBU units). With this strategy, Hyundai will be able to control expenses, reduce import taxes, and provide competitive pricing in the luxury automobile market.
While preserving the brand's distinctive emphasis on elegance, workmanship, and technology, local assembly is anticipated to increase accessibility for Genesis vehicles.
Prospective Models and Positioning in the Market
SUVs Anticipated to Lead the Range: SUVs such as the GV80 and its coupe-SUV form are expected to be the main attraction of Genesis's Indian debut, according to industry analysts. Luxury SUVs from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW are anticipated to be direct competitors of these cars.
Curiously, the GV80's design has already been registered as a trademark in India, indicating that it may be among the first Genesis automobiles to be sold in that country.
A Decade of Global Success
Hyundai's High-End Offshoot to a World-Class Rival: In 2015, Hyundai's luxury brand, Genesis, was spun off to operate independently from the main Hyundai lineup. A variety of internal combustion (petrol, mild hybrid) models (G70, G80, G90, GV70, GV80) and electric versions (GV60, Electrified G80, Electrified GV70) are currently available worldwide from Genesis. Their total sales since the founding have surpassed one million units.
Hyundai's larger ₹45,000 Crore India Investment Plan components
Hyundai intends to launch the Genesis in India as part of a larger investment and product strategy. By 2030, the business plans to invest over ₹45,000 crore (about US$5 billion) in India for research and development, capacity growth, and the introduction of new products. Hyundai India intends to introduce 26 models during that period, including seven completely new nameplates.
The company aims to break into new car markets, such as MPVs and off-road SUVs, and by 2027, introduce India's first domestically produced electric SUV. By FY2030, the objective is to make India Hyundai's second-largest worldwide market.
