FASTag Annual Pass to offer limited coverage on the highway

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has recently launched the FASTag Annual Pass that enables the owners of a shifted vehicle to travel without restrictions at a fixed price. Though the pass is created with the intention to minimize the cost of an individual frequently using the highway and commuting on the roads, it has restrictions, given that it cannot be used on all the highways and state-managed expressways.

The idea behind the FASTag Annual Pass, which was introduced on August 15, 2025, is the final push of the government to streamline and reduce toll costs to the people with their private vehicles.

By paying once the amount of Rs 3,000, users will be allowed to make unlimited trips on national highways and expressways that come under central government ownership or a maximum of 200 toll swings in one year, whichever is earlier.

The reaction was sensational, with more than 1.4 lakh passes being sold in the first 24 hours and five lakh subscriptions in just four days, indicating a keen reception by regular highway users.

Who is Eligible to Pass?

It only applies to non-commercial casual vehicles, cars, jeeps and vans with active FASTag that are registered with a legitimate registration number. It cannot be disengaged and taken to another vehicle and is automatically disengaged in the event of mistreatment.

In point-based toll plazas, one way is considered as a trip and in the case of a trip going and returning, the same set of toll plazas is considered as two trips.

What the Pass Does Not Cover

The FASTag Annual Pass has an appeal although it cannot work out on all highways. It only includes routes which are under the management of NHAI and the MoRTH. The state highways and expressways maintained by local authorities will continue to toll the user according to a regular FASTag account.

This implies that passengers on highways such as Yamuna Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway and Agra-Lucknow Expressway in the state of Uttar Pradesh will be managed by the state governments. The scheme also does not cover taxis, commercial fleets, local tolls and parking charges.

The Way to Activate the Pass

Activating is easy and it can be done through the Rajmarg Yatra app or online portal developed by NHAI/MoRTH. Users are required to confirm their FASTag ID, do the Rs 3,000 payment and get the confirmation in two hours.

After activation, FASTag will maintain two linked accounts where one account can be used to pay the annual pass and the second to have regular deductions for tolls.

Conclusion

Long-distance drive commuters can save a lot of money annually with the FASTag Annual Pass. One should, however, be careful of its constrained validity, particularly on the expressways that are controlled by the state, to prevent ambiguity when travelling.
