FASTag Annual Pass Launched: Eligibility, Rules, Exclusions

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced the FASTag Annual Pass, allowing private cars, jeeps, and vans to travel on national highways and expressways for a fixed fee. But with certain exclusions and specific rules, here’s everything users should know before opting in.

The FASTag Annual Pass was launched on August 15, 2025, providing private vehicle owners with a pre-fixed annual fee model for using highways. With a payment of ₹3,000, the pass provides one year or 200 trips—whichever is sooner—of validity.

After crossing this threshold, the pass converts into a normal FASTag. Renewal is necessary to enjoy the benefits again.

How It Works

The pass can be bought through the Rajmargyatra mobile app or the website of NHAI. After payment and checking for eligibility, the pass is associated with the registered FASTag within two hours.

Notably, the scheme is non-transferable. It is aligned with the registration number of the vehicle, and not with the FASTag account alone. Vehicles with only a chassis number are not eligible until they are updated with proper VRN details.

What's Included and What's Not

The pass enables free travel on National Highways (NHs) and National Expressways (NEs). It does not include numerous major expressways, state highways, or toll plazas operated by local governments.

In these instances, the FASTag operates in the usual manner, and tolls are levied according to usual charges. Parking facilities are also not included.

For tolling systems, a single trip is defined differently:

  • Point-based plazas: Each crossing counts as one trip. A round trip equals two.

  • Closed tolling systems: One complete entry-exit pair counts as a single trip.

Vehicle Eligibility and Restrictions

The pass is only for private non-commercial vehicles, jeeps, and vans, as established in the VAHAN database. Its usage with a commercial vehicle results in instant cancellation. Moreover, the FASTag should be correctly fixed on the windshield to become active.

Not Required, But Voluntary

The FASTag Annual Pass is not mandatory. Drivers may go about with normal FASTag payments if they do not wish to opt in. The latter will also get SMS notifications and alerts pertaining to usage and balance information.
