Audi A6 Allroad Returns with PHEV and Diesel

Audi has unveiled the fifth-generation A6 Allroad with two powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid for the first time. The rugged estate gets a wider body, more ground clearance, standard all-wheel drive, and adaptive air suspension over the standard A6 Avant, making it a more capable all-rounder for drivers who want practicality without sacrificing performance.

  • The fifth-generation A6 Allroad introduces a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time, producing 367hp and offering up to 95km of electric-only range.
  • The Allroad gains a wider body, 34mm more ground clearance, and standard adaptive air suspension over the A6 Avant estate.

Audi has taken the wraps off the fifth-generation A6 Allroad, the more adventure-ready sibling of the A6 Avant estate.

For the first time in the Allroad's history, Audi is offering a plug-in hybrid powertrain alongside a conventional diesel option. The new model also gains a wider body, increased ground clearance, and standard all-wheel drive compared to the Avant on which it is based.

Two Powertrains on Offer, PHEV Leads the Charge

The plug-in hybrid setup pairs a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 367hp and 500Nm.

A 25.9kWh battery pack, with 20.7kWh usable, gives the PHEV an electric-only range of up to 95km on the WLTP cycle. It completes the 0-100kph sprint in 5.5 seconds and tops out at 250kph. Using an 11kW AC charger, Audi claims a full charge takes just 2.5 hours.

The alternative is a 3-litre V6 diesel with mild-hybrid assistance, putting out 299hp and a healthy 580Nm. Interestingly, the diesel is marginally quicker off the mark, covering the 0-100kph run in 5.4 seconds, though both variants share the same 250kph top speed. Rear-wheel drive comes as standard on the PHEV, while the diesel offers it as an option.

Wider, Taller and More Capable Than the Avant

The Allroad's dimensions set it apart visually and functionally from the estate it is based upon. Audi has widened the body by 111mm, with the front and rear tracks expanding by 74mm and 70mm, respectively.

Ground clearance is up by 34mm, and thanks to the standard adaptive air suspension, drivers can raise it by a further 15mm using one of the Allroad-specific off-road modes. When high-speed stability is needed, the ride height can also be lowered.

Key Dimensions at a Glance

DimensionMeasurement
Length5,016mm
Width1,986mm
Height1,479 to 1,508mm
Wheelbase2,930mm
Tyre Sizes19 to 21 inches

Handling agility gets a boost from a rear-axle steering system that turns up to 5 degrees opposite to the front wheels, trimming the turning circle by as much as one metre.

Exterior Styling and Interior Appointments

Externally, the Allroad announces its off-road intent through a more aggressive front bumper, a revised grille, and wider tyres. The styling package includes chunky skid plates, side skirts, a diffuser, roof bars, and a sportier rear bumper.

LED lighting features both front and rear, and a trailer hitch is available as an option, rated to tow up to 2,000kg for the PHEV and 2,500kg for the diesel.

Inside, the cabin layout follows the Avant's lead but introduces a new four-spoke round steering wheel. A 14.5-inch central touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity and an 11.9-inch driver display are fitted as standard.

An optional 10.9-inch front passenger screen is also available. Comfort features include seat ventilation, seat massage functionality, and a dimmable panoramic glass roof. A four-zone climate control system, electric door-closing assist, and a Bang and Olufsen sound system with speakers in the front headrests can all be specified as options.

Boot Space and Luggage Practicality

Practicality, naturally, remains central to the Allroad's appeal. The rear seats fold in a 40:20:40 split and can be released remotely from the boot area. Boot capacity stands at 466 litres for the diesel and 404 litres for the PHEV, the difference owing to the latter's battery packaging.
