The Toyota Fortuner MHEV (mild hybrid electric vehicle) was launched late last year in the South African market. This variant also has plans for introduction into some of the growing global markets, including India.
While no official word has been given as to when it will hit the Indian shores, media reports speculate that the Indian market could welcome it later this year.
2025 Toyota Fortuner MHEV-Technology Discussion
With a 2.8L diesel engine being paired with a 48V mild-hybrid set-up, the Fortuner mild hybrid is designed to produce a combined output of 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, out of which the mild hybrid system will contribute an additional 16bhp and 42Nm.
The system consists of three major components – a DC-DC converter, a 48V battery, and a belt-driven electric generator, which replaces the conventional alternator in the engine.
According to Toyota, the SUV's mild hybrid version promises a fuel efficiency improvement of completion at about 5% over the standard Fortuner (diesel). It boasts a 6-speed automatic gearbox while also offering a few drivetrain system options: 2WD and 4WD. Engine throttle response is also said to be better in the SUV through its mild-hybrid system, along with a new idle start-stop feature that enhances smoother engine restarts.
New-Gen Toyota Fortuner India Launch?
This could also introduce the mild hybrid system with the generational update, which is earmarked this year by the Japanese company. The all-new model Fortuner would also have a 2.0L turbo petrol engine with multiple states of tune – 300bhp with 400Nm, 400bhp with 549Nm, and new 600bhp.
The latest rumor suggests the new engine will possibly be a replacement for the older 2.8L diesel. However, it is unclear what spec of the turbocharged petrol engine will be used in the India-spec new Toyota Fortuner.
Possibly, the all-new model would also offer the Toyota Safety Sense (ADAS), which is an advanced driver assistance system with a 360-degree camera facility, and there may be replacement of the existing electric hydraulic power steering with a hydraulic unit.
