"Know Your Vehicle" is what KYV stands for. Recently, FASTag users were required to go through this verification process, which aims to strictly link each RFID toll tag to a single vehicle.
Guidelines published by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) state that the procedure calls for:
- An uncovered car registration certificate (RC).
- Clear photos of the attached tag sticker, a side view of the axles, a front view of the number plate, and the tag.
- In order to implement the “One Vehicle, One Tag” rule (OVOT), the FASTag is linked to the vehicle registration number (VRN) and chassis number.
Why was the NHAI KYV Process 2025 regulation put in place?
KYV’s main objectives are:
- To ensure that each tag is associated with a distinct vehicle in order to prevent FASTag misuse (such as utilizing one tag for several vehicles).
- To keep the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) toll system's database up to date with precise vehicle-tag mapping to promote more efficient toll collection and fewer conflicts.
- For example, tags older than three years must update their verification and tags older than five years must be replaced in order to enforce regulatory compliance.
Important Guidelines and Deadlines for 2025
- The NHAI KYV process 2025 procedure is scheduled to start from October 31, 2025, according to the NHAI/IHMCL. Vehicle tags without a completed KYV may be deactivated.
- According to new updates released on October 31, 2025, the procedure has been simplified: side photos are no longer required, and only a clear front shot displaying the number plate and tag is required.
- Owners will be given "adequate opportunities" to finish KYV prior to any disruption, rather than having their FASTag services immediately terminated for non-compliance.
- For newly-issued cars or tags: To remain compliant, you must fill out the KYV/Renewal of tag data that is specific to your situation (check with your issuer).
- If a tag is more than five years old or was issued three to five years ago, it should be checked for renewal or re-verification requirements under prior circulations.
Step-by-Step Checklist for FASTag Users
Check to see if you have a pending KYV or vehicle-verification request by logging into the site or app of your FASTag issuer (bank, NBFC, or official FASTag portal).
Upload/send in:
- Your Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) in digital format, complete with unmasked information.
- A clear front-facing picture of your car that displays the licence plate and the FASTag sticker or windshield-mounted tag (as of the most recent update, just a front view is necessary).
- Records in the VAHAN database must match the vehicle's registration number and chassis number.
- Make sure you receive any OTPs or messages from your issuer, and that the mobile number associated with the tag is accurate.
- Check with your issuer for any "re-KYV" or replacement requirements as per previous instructions if your tag is older (three to five years or more than five years).
- Await verification confirmation after submitting. To avoid toll problems, make sure your tag is still active and that money is loaded in the interim.
- Get help from your issuer's customer service or the NHAI helpline (1033) if you run across mistakes or delays in the process.
Amendments to the FASTag system in 2025
In addition to the mandatory NHAI KYV process 2025, the Indian FASTag system has witnessed a lot of changes in 2025.
A few of the big changes in the FASTag system are:
- February 17, 2025 - Blacklisted FASTag rules
Failure of toll payments by blacklisted FASTags due to any reason, say, low tag balance, KYC issues, etc. Commuters will have to pay double charges for crossing through the toll plaza.
- August 15, 2025 - Introduction of the FASTag annual pass
The launch of the yearly FASTag pass at just ₹3,ooo. The pass will be valid for a year or up to 200 trips, whichever comes first. This was launched to make journeys affordable and convenient.
- October 31, 2025 - NHAI KYV process
The KYV process was launched to enforce the “One Vehicle, One Tag” rule across the nation to eliminate the chances of fraud and ensure the FASTag is linked with the correct vehicle.
- November 15, 2025 - Revised penalties
The revised FASTag penalties dictate that non-FASTag commuters will have to pay more than the standard toll charges. For cash payments, travellers will have to pay 2x the toll charges and for UPI transactions, commuters will have to pay 1.25x the applicable toll fees.
Upcoming additions to the FASTag system
The upcoming changes to the FASTag system aim at revolutionising and advancing the toll collection system in India. In this context, the authorities have come up with the idea of implementing a barrier-free, Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system.
Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has signed an agreement with ICICI Bank for the implementation of the MLFF tolling system.
The first MLFF system is expected to be implemented at Choryasi Fee Plaza in Gujarat (NH-48).
This initiative will help in reducing traffic congestion, promoting smoother traffic flow, improving revenue collection and eliminating wait time.
