The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Ranchi is governed by the Transport Department of the Government of Jharkhand. Ranchi is the most populated and largest district in Jharkhand. The RTO code for Ranchi is JH-01.

RTO Ranchi is responsible for maintaining road safety and regulating laws the state transport department laid down. Some of its key functions include the following:

  • Collection of road taxes: The Ranchi RTO collects various road taxes and fees from vehicle owners, which are used to develop and maintain roads in the city.

  • Registration of vehicles: It is responsible for registering new vehicles and issuing registration certificates to eligible vehicle owners.

How to Register a Vehicle at Ranchi RTO

If you reside in Ranchi and are planning to purchase a new vehicle, you'll need to register it with the RTO.

You need to follow the steps mentioned below to register your vehicle-

  1. Fill out Form 20: The first step is to fill out Form 20, which is the Motor Vehicle Application form. The form is available to download from the official website of the Ranchi RTO. You can also get a hard copy of the form from the RTO. Make sure to fill out the details in the form carefully.

  2. Additional documents required: You also need to submit the following documents along with the application form:

    • Form 21: Certificate of Sale

    • Form 22: Certificate of Compliance with Pollution and Safety Standards & Road-Worthiness

    • Original and copy of Insurance papers

    • Identity and address proof such as PAN Card and Adhaar Card

    • Form 60: Declaration Form for persons who don't have a PAN Card

    • Passport-size photographs

    • Temporary registration certificate, if any

  3. After submitting all the necessary documents, the RTO officer will conduct the verification. Once the verification is complete, you have to pay the registration fee.

  4. Upon completion of all the above-mentioned steps, the RTO officer will grant you the vehicle registration certificate and the number plate.

How to Renew Registration for a Vehicle at Ranchi RTO

Every vehicle in India must renew its registration after completing 15 years since the first registration. The Ranchi RTO will check the vehicle's fitness for the road before issuing a renewal. The RC renewal application shall be filed no more than 60 days before its expiry.

Here are the steps to follow for the renewal of RC-

  1. Fill out Form 25: The first step is to fill out Form 25, which is the application for the renewal of the vehicle registration certificate. The form can be downloaded from the Ranchi RTO's official website. You can also obtain the form from the RTO office.

  2. Additional documents required: Additional documents that are required for renewing the vehicle registration certificate comprise-

    • PUC Certificate

    • Certificate of registration

    • Valid Insurance certificate

    • Proof of road taxes paid up to date.

    • Vehicle owner's ID and address proof.

    • Signature of the vehicle owner.

    • Fitness certificate.

  3. Once you've submitted all the necessary documents, you'll have to pay the renewal registration fee.

  4. After completing his verification process, the RTO officer will grant you the renewed RC documents.

How to Transfer Vehicle Ownership at Ranchi RTO

Vehicle ownership is typically transferred in a case when a person buys/sells a used vehicle. The process of transfer of vehicle ownership is overseen by the RTO and requires the following documents-

  1. Fill out Form 29 and Form 30: The first step is to fill out Form 29 and Form 30. Form 29 is a notice of transfer of vehicle ownership, and Form 30 is an application of intimation of vehicle ownership transfer.

  2. Additional documents required: You are required to submit the following documents for the transfer of vehicle ownership-

    • Registration certificate of the owner

    • Sales certificate in Form 29

    • Form 22: Certificate of Compliance with Pollution and Safety Standards & Road-Worthiness

    • Insurance certificate

    • Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate

    • Proof of address

    • Proof of identity

  3. After submitting all the documents, A transfer fee must be paid to the RTO.

  4. The RTO officer will grant a new registration certificate to the owner after completing his verification.
