The Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine has introduced in India in March 2021 at Rs. 39.90 Lakh. The sedan was launched in three variants A200 Progressive Line, A200d Progressive Line and AMG A35 4Matic. Since then, the car has witnessed a price hike of about Rs. 2 to 3 lakh.
A facelift of the same was globally revealed in October 2022, with several changes inside and out. The facelifted A-Class Limousine features a revised front profile with new headlamps and a revamped grille. The lower air dam has now been updated with a trapezoidal design replacing the oval part. At the rear, the car gets split-LED taillamps.
Inside, the sedan comes with a host of new features. These high-tech aspects include fingerprint sensors for identifying the driver, revamped telematics system and redesigned seats with lumbar support. The brand has also included driver-assisting features such as Active Steering Control that facilitates the lane-keep assist function.
The facelifted A-Class sedan is expected to arrive in India by the end of 2023.
The A-Class saloon takes inspiration from the elder S-Class and E-Class siblings. And despite being an entry-level sedan in the line-up, the car looks mature and grown up and in line with the other latest generation vehicles in the family.
The sedan features a large diamond-studded radiator grille and all-LED headlamps with boomerang-styled LED DRLs. There are minimal creases and this would not offend anyone.
Though the car is small in size, it looks splendid when viewed from the right angles. The 17-inch five-twin spoke aero alloy wheels add to the elegance further, while the roofline that flows seamlessly into the boot lid is well integrated.
The rear has been designed tastefully, with the sharp-looking all-LED taillamps on par with other latest-gen Mercs.
Step inside and you will be welcomed in a warm space. The cabin truly impresses with its nice blend of modern-day elements and old-school layout. The black and beige colour combination, walnut wood trim and brushed aluminium have been tastefully applied.
The two large 10.25-inch screens dominate the dashboard. One is used for infotainment, while the other is the digital driver information display. The infotainment is powered by Mercedes MBUX software, with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and connected car tech, apart from Alexa-based voice assistant.
The car comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, and the turbine-shaped rotary aircon looks cool, especially with ambient lighting. The 3-spoke steering wheel is great to hold and comes with a plethora of touch-and-press buttons for controlling the infotainment and the instrument cluster.
The front-passenger seats are powered with memory function and are decently comfortable. The sunroof, though not panoramic, still offers an airy feeling. There is a separate stowage space for wireless charging at the front console. The seats at the rear are crafted to pamper the passengers with enough knee room and headroom, 2 USB charging sockets and a rear armrest with a cupholder.
The boot space is decent with 405 litres in the petrol variant and 395 litres in the diesel one. You can further increase the boot by folding down the rear seats.
Despite the entry-level tag, safety has not been compromised the least. The car has been equipped with a total of 7 airbags and comes with safety aspects such as an anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and traction control.
There is a range of automated assist features, including active brake assist, attention assist, and active bonnet, which avoid and minimizes damage during accidents.
Then there is a system like PreSafe that ensures the passengers remain safe. It shuts off the windows, tights the seat belt and closes the sunroof automatically in case the crash seems unavoidable.
The Active Parking Assist with reversing camera and Parktronic help in narrow parking spaces.
The sedan gets both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine is the 1.3L turbocharged unit that pumps out 163PS and 250Nm torque. The diesel one employs a 2.0L unit that generates 150PS and 320Nm torque.
The petrol engine is reasonably refined with a slight turbo lag. However, the quick-shifting 7-speed DCT gearbox is enjoyable enough when driven calmly. It starts off well and goes smoothly in the punchy mid-range.
However, if you are used to revving hard, it can be an irritating experience as the engine needs to be worked hard in the top range. With a petrol engine underneath, the A-Class can do a 0-100kmph sprint in 8.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 230kmph.
The diesel engine, on the other hand, is faster not only on paper but also in real driving conditions.
The acceleration is also better, and the car can dash from 0-100kmph in 8.2 seconds, touching the top speed of 227kmph.
The ride and comfort are a step up from the predecessors with the presence of stiff suspension. The car offers comfortable and compliant ride quality and is perfectly sized for city use, with the light steering making the drive a breeze.
The high-profile tyres further cushion out the bumps and road undulations to deliver a comfortable riding experience.
