Xiaomi, widely known for its smartphones, has ventured into the automotive world with its first electric vehicle, the Xiaomi SU7. Announced in March 2021, this EV is already on sale in China, and it was recently showcased in India. Here’s everything you need to know about the Xiaomi SU7:
1. Xiaomi SU7 Design
The Xiaomi SU7's design reflects the influence of automotive veterans. Li Tianyuan, a former BMW designer known for his work on the iX electric SUV, led the design team, with input from Chris Bangle, ex-BMW design head. The EV takes cues from luxury electric sedans like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S, although it's positioned to compete with the Tesla Model 3. Notable design elements include McLaren 720S-inspired headlights, a tinted rear glass, an adjustable rear spoiler, 19-inch alloy wheels, and frameless doors. The SU7 is available in various colors, including Meteor Blue, Radiant Purple, Basalt Grey, Lava Orange, Pearl White, and Diamond Black.
2. Xiaomi SU7 Features
True to Xiaomi's reputation, the SU7 is packed with features. It includes an NFC card for entry (no physical key required), a heated steering wheel, and a 7.1-inch flip-up instrument cluster that activates when the car is switched on. The front seats are electrically adjustable, with ventilation and heating functions. The EV boasts a 16.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Xiaomi’s Hyper OS, offering a seamless user experience. The cabin’s overall quality is enhanced by soft-close doors, adding to its premium feel.
3. Xiaomi SU7 ADAS
Leveraging its tech expertise, Xiaomi has equipped the SU7 with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) level 2 capabilities. This includes a LIDAR sensor (the noticeable "hump" above the windshield) and 11 high-definition cameras positioned around the vehicle, providing advanced safety and driving assistance features.
4. Xiaomi SU7 Powertrain
The SU7 offers multiple motor configurations, with the showcased model in India being the SU7 Max. It features all-wheel drive with dual electric motors – an induction motor at the front and an asynchronous motor at the rear. This setup delivers a combined output of 673hp and 838Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100kph acceleration in just 2.78 seconds. The 101kWh NMC battery offers a claimed range of 800 km, based on the Chinese test cycle.
5. Xiaomi SU7 India Launch and Price
Currently, the Xiaomi SU7 is available only in China, with prices ranging from 215,900 Yuan to 299,900 Yuan (approximately Rs 25.4 lakh to Rs 35.3 lakh). While there are no immediate plans to launch the SU7 in other countries, including India, Xiaomi officials have hinted at the possibility in the future. The company aims to perfect the product before expanding internationally, following a strategy similar to its smartphone launches.
