The much-awaited electric vehicle, the JSW MG Motor India’s Windsor EV, debuted in Sep 2024 with the ex-showroom starting price of ₹ 13,49,000. With affordability and lounging-like amenities, as well as the lifetime battery warranty, the MG’s Windsor EV is, in fact, its current market darling.
Total dispatches of PVs set in the last quarter of 2024 reached 20,580, of which 10,045 are WV-based EVs comprising 49% of the brand’s overall sales in the same period. This has not only established the fact that the Windsor EV has a market within the country, but also saw MG solidifying itself more and more into the Indian EV market.
Windsor EV: A Sales Phenomenon
Since it was released in May 2021, the Windsor EV has reflected month-on-month growth in sales that places it at the Bowland for those willing to own an electric car in India.
October 2024: 3,116 units
November 2024: 3,144 units
December 2024: 3,785 units
Demand for MG’s fleet of EVs continued to rise in December, with Total Electric Vehicles (EV) sales of the Windsor EV, ZS EV, and the newly launched Comet EV comprising more than 70% of the passenger vehicle maker’s December sales of 7516 units.
MG Motor India’s Rising EV Market Share
The electric mobility strategy in the car production and market is paying off big time for MG Motor. Sales of EVs in the company increased to 21,464 in 2024, way above 9,523 in the previous year, a year-on-year growth of 125%. This growth put MG’s EV market share at 21% making them the second-largest EV player in India.
On the same note, Tata Motors, which held the largest market share, recorded a reduction to 62% from a previous percentage rating.
Expanding Reach to Tier 3 and 4 Cities
To maintain such a growth rate, MG is actively increasing its sales division. The company plans to expand the network reach up to 270 cities and quality, newly adding 100 touch points of stores by the end of 2024 with planned 520 store touch points across the country by March 2025 targeting rural and Tier 3/4 cities as well.
What’s Next for MG?
MG plans to display its Cyberster Roadster during the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 from January 17 to 22 and its Mifa 9 MPV under the new luxury channel, MG Select. The second model in MG’s EV portfolio is later this year, establishing this brand as a pioneer of electric cars in India.
