When it rains, it pours. Tesla has begun the actual work of erecting its manufacturing plant in India. As per an Economic Times report, Maharashtra could become Tesla's home away from home. The report also suggests that the Elon Musk-led EV firm is holding talks with Tata Motors for a possible collaboration. Everything has been fast-tracked for the California-based company since the recent meeting between Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House.
Why Maharashtra?
Maharashtra is home to a multitude of automobile manufacturers, especially in the Chakan area (Pune), where Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj, Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen all have establishments. Logistics will also play a vital role in this consideration. Pune makes sense as Tesla has opened its first office at Panchshil Business Park, where they signed a five-year lease, as reported in 2023.
Tesla is hiring in India
To show that Tesla means business about entering the domestic market, the company has posted 13 job openings on its Liechtenstein page for its Indian office. Jobs are based out of Mumbai and Delhi, and Tesla is focused on setting up customer service and other back-end operations.
The following job postings were listed on the company's LinkedIn page: Service Technician, Service Manager, Inside Sales Advisor, Customer Support Supervisor, Customer Support Specialist, Order Operations Specialist, Service Advisor, Tesla Advisor, Parts Advisor, Delivery Operations Specialist, Business Operations Analyst, and Store Manager.
Tesla's permutations of showrooms
From 2021, when it pinned down a showroom in Mumbai, a great deal has changed till it now zeros in on two locations. Thanks to the Indian government that brought down the customs duty on cars that are priced above $40,000, from 110 percent to 70 percent.
Tesla now has a window of opportunity it was waiting for. The company has finalized setting up showrooms at the Aerocity in New Delhi and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.
