Renault 5 E Tech A Tribute To Classic Heritage And Future Mobility

Renault 5 E-Tech: A Tribute to Classic Heritage and Future Mobility

Renault has unveiled the much-anticipated Renault 5 E-Tech at the Geneva Motor Show, breathing new life into its iconic 1972 classic, the Renault 5. This electric reincarnation pays homage to the timeless design of the original model while embracing contemporary electric vehicle technology. With vibrant color schemes, distinctive features, and impressive performance, the Renault 5 E-Tech aims to captivate both enthusiasts and a broader consumer base.

Exterior Design and Homage to Heritage:

The Renault 5 E-Tech draws inspiration from its classic predecessor, incorporating design elements such as vertical rear lights, implied air intake on the bonnet, and distinctive wings reminiscent of the Renault 5 Turbo. The exterior exudes vibrancy and nostalgia, with the addition of "pupils" in the front LED headlights, creating a charming "blinking" effect. The car's design pays tribute to its heritage while embracing a modern and dynamic aesthetic.

Interior Echoing Classic Elements:

Inside, the R5 continues its homage to the past with borrowed seats from the R5 Turbo of the 80s, a quilted roof lining, a padded glove compartment area, and a rectangular instrument cluster with rounded edges reminiscent of earlier Renault 5 generations. This blend of classic elements and contemporary features creates a unique and appealing interior.

Battery Options and Performance:

The Renault 5 E-Tech offers a choice between two battery options – a 40kWh variant with a claimed range of 186 miles and a 52kWh version extending the range to an impressive 248 miles. Two motor options provide outputs of 120bhp or 150bhp, with the latter accelerating the vehicle from 0 to 62mph in less than eight seconds. The car's performance surpasses even the iconic Renault 5 Turbo, showcasing the capabilities of modern electric propulsion.

Trims and Features:

The car comes in two trims – Techno and Iconic Five. The Techno version includes standard features like alloy wheels, a reversing camera, inductive smartphone charging, a charging display on the bonnet, and adaptive cruise control. The Iconic Five variant adds heated seats and steering wheel, parking assistance, and various design features. Plans include expanding the battery options, including a 'Roland Garros Collection.'

Innovative Platform and Shared Features:

Built on the new AmpR Small platform tailored for electric vehicles, the R5 prioritizes the electric variant, resulting in a shorter development cycle. The electric motor, derived from the Megane and Scenic E-Tech Electric, benefits from new power electronics and a revised gearbox to fit the compact size of the R5. Shared features from existing platforms like the Clio and Captur contribute to the car's well-rounded design.

Key Specifications:

  • Boot capacity: 326 litres

  • Weight: 1,350 to 1,450 kilograms

  • Towing capacity: Up to 500 kilograms

  • Turning circle: 10.3 meters

  • V2L charging capability via adapter: Up to 3.7 kW

The Renault 5 E-Tech stands as a testament to Renault's commitment to blending classic heritage with future mobility, offering a small electric vehicle that captures hearts and embraces the electric revolution.
