November 2024 Hatchback Sales Analysis Baleno Leads Suvs Shift Trends

November 2024 Hatchback Sales Analysis: Baleno Leads, SUVs Shift Trends

Overview

The hatchback segment in India recorded 81,551 units in November 2024, reflecting a 4.18% YoY decline compared to 85,112 units in November 2023. Month-over-month (MOM) sales also dropped by 8.75% from 89,369 units in October 2024, a festive month boosted by discounts.

Despite the slump, hatchbacks retained their significant role in the market, outselling sedans, which registered only 24,757 units last month. However, SUVs continue to dominate consumer interest, pulling buyers away from smaller models.

Top Performers: Baleno, Swift, and WagonR

The Maruti Baleno secured its position as both the best-selling hatchback and India’s top-selling car, with 16,293 units sold, marking a 25.71% YoY growth and a 1.3% MOM increase. This success translates to a commanding 19.98% market share, showcasing its enduring appeal.

The Maruti Swift, despite being a popular choice, saw sales dip to 14,737 units, reflecting a 3.75% YoY and a significant 15.98% MOM decline. It retained an 18.07% market share, emphasizing its importance in Maruti’s portfolio.

The WagonR, a long-time favorite among budget-conscious buyers, recorded 13,982 units, a 15.60% YoY decline, though MOM sales improved slightly by 0.43%, giving it a 17.15% market share.

Hyundai and Tata Maintain Presence

Hyundai’s Grand i10 NIOS experienced a 20.37% YoY growth, selling 5,667 units, though MOM sales dipped by 9.11%. Similarly, the Tata Tiago, including its EV variant, sold 5,319 units, a slight 3.43% YoY decline, but with a promising 13.61% MOM growth.

Other Hatchbacks: Mixed Results

Hyundai’s i20 (3,925 units), Toyota’s Glanza (3,806 units), and Maruti’s Celerio (2,379 units) faced YoY and MOM declines, with the Celerio bucking the trend by growing 7.40% YoY.

In the lower tier, Maruti Ignis saw a robust 32.71% YoY growth (2,203 units), while Tata Altroz underperformed with a 57.96% YoY decline (2,083 units).

EV hatchbacks like the MG Comet (600 units), Renault Kwid (546 units), and Citroen C3 (200 units) struggled, though the Citroen eC3 EV surged by 238.89% YoY, albeit with small volumes.

Conclusion

While hatchbacks remain integral to the market, declining sales highlight a consumer shift toward SUVs. Maruti’s dominance persists, but automakers must innovate to revive demand in this competitive segment.
