Compact SUVs Claim a Third of Top 10 Sales in November 2024
The compact SUV segment continues to dominate the Indian automotive market, with the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and Maruti Fronx making up over 30% of the top 10 bestselling cars in November 2024. These models contributed significantly to total sales, with their combined figures of 45,129 units representing 30.31% of the 1,48,882 units sold across the top 10 models.
Maruti Fronx Shines with Record Growth
Among compact SUVs, the Maruti Fronx was the standout performer, achieving an impressive year-on-year (YoY) growth of 51%. It recorded 14,882 units sold in November 2024, a significant leap from the 9,867 units sold in November 2023. This growth propelled the Fronx past competitors like the Hyundai Venue (9,754 units), Kia Sonet (6,433 units), and Mahindra XUV 3OO (7,656 units).
The Fronx’s success is further underlined by its recent milestone of 2 lakh units sold in just 17 months since launch. As the second-best-selling Nexa model after the Baleno, it plays a crucial role in Maruti Suzuki’s dominance in the utility vehicle (UV) segment.
Nexon and Brezza: Reliable Performers
The Tata Nexon narrowly edged out the Maruti Brezza, selling 15,329 units compared to Brezza’s 14,918. The Nexon and Brezza have become staples in the top 10 list, consistently driving compact SUV sales with strong consumer demand.
SUVs Continue Growth While Hatchbacks Decline
While SUVs and MPVs recorded steady growth, hatchbacks struggled. The Hyundai Creta stood out among SUVs with a 31% YoY increase, selling 15,452 units, bolstered by its recent facelift. Other models like the Maruti Ertiga and Mahindra Scorpio also saw consistent demand with 18% and 4% YoY growth, respectively.
In contrast, hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift and Wagon R faced sharp declines, with Swift sales falling by 4% and Wagon R plunging by 16%. Despite updates, these models face growing competition from the rising popularity of SUVs, which offer higher ground clearance, practicality, and aspirational value.
Compact SUVs: The Future of Indian Mobility
As demand for compact SUVs surges, models like the Nexon, Brezza, and Fronx continue to redefine India’s automotive landscape. Their robust sales affirm their popularity, cementing the compact SUV segment as a pivotal driver of market growth.
