Mercedes Says Goodbye to Old Favorites, Hello to a Cool New SUV

Mercedes-Benz is refreshing its compact car range. The A-Class and B-Class will end production by 2026, making room for a tough baby G-Class SUV built for adventure and style.

Big news from Mercedes-Benz!

The company is giving its small car lineup a major makeover. By 2026, the A-Class sedan, A-Class hatchback, and B-Class minivan will be history. Why?

To roll out an awesome new ride: the "baby G-Class" SUV. This compact off-roader is set to steal the show with its tough looks and adventurous spirit.

Let’s break it down in simple terms.

The End of an Era: A-Class and B-Class

The A-Class has been around since 1997, starting as a practical family car. Over the years, it grew fancier, with a sleek sedan version hitting the roads in 2018.

The B-Class, launched in 2005, was a boxy minivan for those who wanted extra space with a touch of Mercedes luxury.

These cars did great in Europe—think millions sold—but didn’t quite win over drivers in big markets like China or the United States.

Mercedes’ tech boss, Markus Schafer, put it simply: “We’re cutting the clutter and focusing on what people want.”

By 2026, production of these models will stop—exactly 29 years after the A-Class debuted and 21 years after the B-Class. It’s a bold move to keep things fresh and exciting.

Enter the Star: The Baby G-Class

Now, here’s the fun part. Mercedes is replacing those old models with the baby G-Class, a smaller version of the legendary G-Wagon. If you’ve seen the G-Class, you know it’s that big, boxy SUV that screams luxury and can climb mountains. The baby G-Class keeps that vibe but shrinks it down for city streets and off-road trails.

This isn’t just another small Mercedes car. While models like the CLA, GLA, and GLB will use the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform, the baby G-Class gets its custom setup.

Why? - Because it’s built for rugged action—think bigger wheels, higher ground clearance, and maybe even some of the G-Wagon’s famous off-road tricks, like locking differentials. That’s tech that helps it grip tough terrain like a champ.

What’s It Look Like?

Mercedes has dropped some teasers, and the baby G-Class looks cool. It’s got that classic boxy shape with a lowercase “g” badge, nodding to its big brother from 1979.

Picture a mini G-Wagon with a modern twist—tough enough to tackle dirt paths but stylish enough for a night out.

Some say it might remind you of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, a compact off-roader, but with Mercedes’ fancy flair.

Why the Big Switch?

Mercedes isn’t just guessing here. SUVs are hot right now—especially in places like the US and China, where they outsell regular cars by a ton. In 2022 alone, SUVs made up nearly 50% of global car sales.

Mercedes wants a bigger slice of that pie. Plus, they’re all about going electric. The MMA platform is built for battery-powered cars, and while the baby G-Class starts with its platform, an electric version could pop up later.

Tech and Features to Expect

The baby G-Class isn’t just about looks. It’ll likely pack Mercedes’ slick MBUX system: think a big touchscreen, voice commands like “Hey Mercedes,” and smart safety features.

Want it to warn you about traffic or park itself?

It’ll probably do that. And with the G-Class DNA, it could borrow some heavy-duty gear, like those three locking differentials, making it a beast on rocky roads.

Who’s It Up Against?

This new SUV steps into a busy ring. The BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Volvo XC40 are already fighting for compact luxury SUV fans. But the baby G-Class has an edge with its off-road skills and standout design. It’s not just for city folks—it’s for anyone who dreams of adventure without needing a giant ride.

What It Means for You

If you love the A-Class or B-Class, you’ve got until 2026 to grab one—production ends then.

After that, the baby G-Class takes over, expected to hit showrooms soon after. It’s perfect for city drivers who want style or explorers who crave a luxury off-roader. Mercedes is betting big that this shift will keep them ahead of the game.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t just about one car. Mercedes is all-in on SUVs and electric vehicles. They’ve promised an electric option in every segment by 2025—pretty ambitious since that’s just a year away!

The recent EQG concept, an electric G-Class, shows they mean business. The baby G-Class fits right into this plan, blending tough performance with future-ready tech.

Wrapping up

Mercedes-Benz is shaking things up big time. The A-Class and B-Class are bowing out after solid runs; 29 and 21 years, respectively making way for the baby G-Class by 2026. This compact SUV promises rugged fun, luxury vibes, and a fresh take on the G-Wagon legacy. Whether you’re cruising the streets or hitting the trails, Mercedes is gearing up to deliver something special.
