Mercedes-AMG E 53 PHEV India Launch Set For July 23

The performance sedan makes a comeback to Mercedes-AMG's India range with a straight-six plug-in hybrid setup, promising blistering acceleration alongside a genuine electric-only range, ahead of its price announcement later this month.

  • Mercedes-AMG will reintroduce the E 53 sedan to India as a plug-in hybrid on July 23.

  • The performance saloon combines a straight-six petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 585hp.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ will make its way to Indian showrooms on July 23, 2026. This marks the return of the E 53 nameplate to the brand's performance line-up in the country, this time wearing a thoroughly modern plug-in hybrid powertrain rather than the mild-hybrid setup seen on the outgoing model.

The car slots in as one of Mercedes-AMG's more electrified offerings for buyers who still want a proper six-cylinder soundtrack under the bonnet.

What Powers The New E 53

At the heart of the car sits a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine good for 449hp on its own. This is paired with an electric motor built into the nine-speed automatic gearbox, adding up to 163hp more.

Together, the combined output touches 585hp and 750Nm of torque in the standard state of tune, figures that would have seemed extravagant for a mid-size saloon not too long ago.

Buyers who tick the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package unlock even more, with total output climbing to 612hp whenever the Race Start function is engaged. That translates into a 0-100kph sprint of just 3.8 seconds and an electronically capped top speed of 280kph, numbers that would embarrass several dedicated sports cars.

The plug-in setup uses a 21.2kWh usable battery, enough for a claimed electric-only range beyond 100km, a genuinely usable figure for daily commuting on electric power alone. The car can run purely on the motor at speeds of up to 140kph, and charges via an 11kW AC connection.

Overseas markets get the option of rapid 60kW DC charging, which can top the battery up from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 20 minutes, though it remains to be seen if this feature makes it to India.

To handle the extra weight and power, AMG engineers have reworked the chassis with added bracing at both axles, widened the front track by 11mm and fitted adaptive dampers with Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes. The braking system has also been retuned to work in harmony with the hybrid system's energy recovery.

Design And Cabin Changes

Visually, the E 53 borrows its silhouette from the standard E-Class but adds a fair number of AMG-specific touches. These include an illuminated front grille, larger air intakes, flared wheel arches and a subtle ducktail spoiler at the rear, which also gains a diffuser and circular quad exhaust tips.

Cars fitted with the Dynamic Plus package get additional visual flourishes, such as red brake calipers and a microfibre-wrapped steering wheel.

Inside, the cabin gets AMG sports seats, a dedicated sports steering wheel and unique trim finishes. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits alongside a 14.4-inch touchscreen for infotainment.

Markets abroad also get the option of the MBUX Superscreen, a secondary display for the front passenger, though its availability in India is not yet confirmed.

Pricing And Availability In India

Official pricing for the E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ will be revealed alongside its launch on July 23, 2026. The previous-generation E 53 sedan first arrived in India back in 2021, before the E 53 Cabriolet joined the range at a later stage.

With this new model, the sedan variant makes its comeback to Mercedes-AMG's India portfolio, giving performance-focused buyers a hybrid alternative within the brand's line-up once again.
