Maruti Unveils Wagon R Flex Fuel: India's First E85-Compatible Car

Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the Wagon R Flex Fuel, marking a landmark moment for India's automotive industry as the country's first E85-compatible passenger vehicle from a domestic manufacturer. The move signals a broader shift in how Indian carmakers are responding to government-led efforts to reduce crude oil dependence through renewable, ethanol-based fuels.

- Maruti Suzuki's Wagon R Flex Fuel becomes India's first E85-ready passenger car, capable of running on ethanol blends up to 85%.

- The launch aligns with India's national ethanol blending programme.

India's road to cleaner fuel has taken a meaningful step forward. Maruti Suzuki has showcased the Wagon R Flex Fuel, making it the first flex-fuel passenger car to be formally introduced by an Indian manufacturer. The announcement came just a day after Hero MotoCorp unveiled E85-compatible versions of its Splendor+ and HF Deluxe motorcycles, suggesting that India's alternative fuel movement is gathering pace across vehicle segments.

While various manufacturers have previously shown flex-fuel prototypes at events and expos, Maruti Suzuki has now gone a step further by bringing an actual product to the table. The Wagon R Flex Fuel is engineered to run on ethanol blends ranging from conventional petrol all the way up to E85, which contains up to 85% ethanol mixed with petrol.

What Flex Fuel Actually Means

The Fuel Behind the Technology

Ethanol is a renewable fuel derived from agricultural produce such as sugarcane and maize, and it sits at the heart of India's long-term energy strategy.

Unlike fossil fuels, ethanol can be produced domestically, which makes it an attractive proposition for a country that imports a significant portion of its crude oil. E85, the blend used in this vehicle, contains up to 85 per cent ethanol, making it far less reliant on traditional petrol than conventional blends.

Engineering Modifications for Higher Ethanol Blends

To handle the different combustion characteristics of higher ethanol concentrations, the Wagon R Flex Fuel has received modifications to its engine management system and fuel delivery components.

The materials used throughout the fuel system have also been updated to ensure compatibility with ethanol over the long term. These changes allow the car to perform reliably across the full range of supported ethanol-petrol blends without compromising drivability.

Backing India's Ethanol Blending Push

The Wagon R Flex Fuel arrives at a time when the Indian government has been actively pushing for greater ethanol content in petrol, with targets set for increasing blending levels in the years ahead.

Flex-fuel vehicles play a natural role in this ecosystem, as they give drivers the freedom to choose whichever blend is available at their nearest fuel station. The practical benefit for the country is a potential reduction in crude oil imports, which carries added weight given ongoing volatility in global energy markets.

More Flex Fuel Vehicles May Follow

Maruti Suzuki is no stranger to taking an early, exploratory approach before committing to full-scale production. The company began testing electric vehicle prototypes in India as far back as October 2018, though its first mass-market electric car only reached showrooms in 2026. A similar patient, staged strategy may well be at play with flex-fuel technology.

For now, the Wagon R Flex Fuel represents the opening move, and whether the company expands this technology across its wider model range will depend on how quickly fuel infrastructure and buyer appetite develop in step with it.
