June 2026 Car Sales: Tata Holds Off Mahindra Again

India's passenger vehicle market continued its steady climb in June 2026, with Maruti Suzuki comfortably leading the pack. Tata Motors fought off a determined challenge from Mahindra to hold on to second place, while Hyundai's numbers slipped due to a supplier fire. Toyota, Kia, MG, Renault and Nissan rounded out a month marked by healthy year on year gains across most brands, even as several carmakers saw sales cool compared with May.

  • Maruti Suzuki led the domestic passenger vehicle market by a wide margin, while Tata Motors edged out Mahindra for second place by fewer than 1,700 units.
  • Hyundai's sales fell nearly ten percent year on year after a fire at a supplier's plant disrupted production.

Market Overview For June 2026

India's car market kept up a healthy pace through June 2026, with most manufacturers posting year on year growth even though many recorded a dip compared with May.

Maruti Suzuki stayed firmly on top of the sales charts, Tata Motors defended its second position from a resurgent Mahindra, and Hyundai remained fourth ahead of Toyota in fifth.

Maruti Suzuki Extends Its Lead

Maruti Suzuki sold 1,47,187 units in June, a rise of nearly twenty four percent over the same month last year, and more than double the volume managed by Tata in second place.

The utility vehicle range, including the Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara and Jimny among others, contributed just over 61,700 units, while the compact car lineup made up of the Alto, Baleno, Dzire, Swift and WagonR added over 75,000 units to the tally.

Tata Motors Fends Off Mahindra

Tata Motors registered 62,076 units for the month, an increase of over sixty seven percent year on year, keeping it ahead of Mahindra by a margin of just 1,683 vehicles. The gap between the two has stayed tight for several months running.

June was an eventful month for the carmaker, with the launch of the Sierra EV alongside a price hike of up to 1.5 percent across its petrol, diesel and electric range that came into effect from July 1.

Mahindra Keeps The Pressure On

Mahindra was not far behind, posting 60,393 units and a year on year jump of nearly twenty eight percent. Demand remained strong across its SUV lineup, with the Scorpio N, Thar, XUV 3XO and XUV 7XO all contributing to the brand's steady momentum.

Hyundai Hit By Supplier Fire

Hyundai sold 39,635 units in June, down almost ten percent from a year earlier. The company attributed the shortfall to a fire at one of its suppliers' facilities, which is understood to have cost the brand roughly 13,900 units of lost production.

The Creta, Venue and Exter continued to anchor its sales, supported by steady interest in the Grand i10 Nios and i20 hatchbacks.

Toyota Kia MG Renault And Nissan

Toyota held on to fifth spot with 28,441 units, a rise of over seven and a half percent, led by the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Glanza.

Kia grew close to nineteen percent to reach 24,552 units on the back of the Seltos and Sonet, and also rolled out a battery rental scheme for its Carens Clavis EV during the month.

MG Motor climbed nearly thirty percent to 7,568 units, while Renault posted the sharpest jump of the smaller players at almost fifty five percent, aided by the start of Duster exports to South Africa.

Nissan extended its growth run to four straight months, up close to forty three percent to 3,006 units, driven by the Magnite and the newly launched Gravite.
