Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has unveiled a comprehensive plan for product expansion until FY2030. Seven completely new nameplates for the Indian market will be among the 26 new models that the Korean carmaker will launch.
A new MPV (multipurpose vehicle) and an off-road SUV are two of the most notable of these recent introductions; they represent Hyundai's first forays into these niche markets in India.
What about the MPV?
Hyundai observes that there is potential in the MPV market, which has been growing in popularity in India despite fierce competition.
By entering this market, it can attract value-conscious and family-oriented consumers who require three-row seating.
What we may anticipate
Despite Hyundai's lack of confirmation about the precise model names, industry analysts predict two possible paths:
A mass-market MPV to rival cars like the Kia Carens and Maruti Ertiga, with an approximate price point of under ₹20 lakh.
Possibly an MPV that would compete with more expensive automobiles and is more luxurious (maybe similar to the worldwide Hyundai Staria).
Although Hyundai's sister brand's MPVs (such as the Kia Carens Clavis) may share platforms, the MPV will have unique features and appearance to stand out.
The MPV is anticipated to launch sometime within the FY2027–2030 window.
The Off-Road SUV: Hyundai's Upcoming Development
Hyundai has confirmed an off-road SUV for the Indian market, which is a market niche it hasn't previously held. The model is characterized by the brand as "muscular" and "having off-road capabilities."
However, ladder-frame 4x4 vehicles are not currently available in India for global Hyundai models; therefore, the product is probably an SUV with a monocoque chassis and all-wheel drive (AWD) rather than a rigid body-on-frame 4x4.
What this implies and when it occurs
As opposed to the severe off-roader market, the new off-road SUV may compete in the lifestyle adventure market, which includes consumers who occasionally want to use rough terrain. Launch is anticipated in FY2027–2030.
The Significance of a Broader Strategy
Hyundai's declaration also relates to:
By 2030, an investment of ₹45,000 crore in India.
Strengthening India as a major export and manufacturing powerhouse worldwide through localisation and new markets.
Electrification push: In addition to these category developments, Hyundai intends to introduce eight hybrid cars and specialized EVs.
All of this shows that Hyundai is expanding its appeal and volume in India by entering new markets in addition to strengthening its current ones (SUVs, sedans, and hatchbacks).
What Should Buyers Look Out for?
With the MPV perhaps launching first (2027–30) and the off-road SUV subsequently, official teasers and release dates are anticipated in the upcoming years.
The MPV may aim for value with three rows of seats and a family-oriented design, while the off-road SUV may prioritize AWD, tough style, and potential export appeal.
Since MPVs have powerful incumbents and off-road SUVs need to be genuine and capable, both models will compete in challenging markets.
Hyundai places a strong focus on localisation, so expect competitive prices, features unique to India, and possibly export versions.
