Hyundai Sub-4m Electric SUV Spied Ahead of India Launch

Hyundai's upcoming subcompact electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, has been spotted testing in South Korea. Part of the brand's ambitious plan to launch 26 new models by FY2030, the sub-4-metre EV is set to rival the Tata Punch EV in one of India's most competitive segments. Test mules reveal a tall, boxy silhouette with EV-specific design cues, while the powertrain is expected to draw from the global Inster EV's platform and battery options.

  • The EV is expected to launch in India by Diwali 2026 or in early 2027

Hyundai's upcoming subcompact electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, has been caught testing ahead of its anticipated India launch. The latest sighting of the test mule was reported from South Korea.

The new EV forms part of Hyundai's wider product offensive, under which the brand plans to introduce 26 new models by FY2030. Two new SUVs are confirmed for the current financial year, with the HE1i being one of them.

The test mule reveals a tall, boxy body profile that draws comparisons with the Hyundai Inster EV sold in global markets. Despite heavy camouflage, key design elements are visible, including top-mounted LED daytime running lights and split headlamps positioned lower on the bumper.

The front fascia appears upright, with a closed-off grille reflecting the EV's zero-emission underpinnings. Body panelling follows a flat, simple design language that lends the SUV a sturdy, no-nonsense presence.

Along the sides, the roofline and window line run nearly parallel to the ground. Notable features include blacked-out wing mirrors, functional roof rails, body cladding, and sporty 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Apollo tyres.

At the rear, the test mule shows a raked windshield, a chunky bumper design, and one of the shortest rear overhangs in its class. Pixel-style lighting elements at both ends are also a possibility on the production model.

Interior and Equipment Likely to Include Dual Screens, ADAS and V2L Support

Interior details remain undisclosed at this stage. Given the competitive nature of the sub-4-metre electric SUV segment, Hyundai is expected to pack the cabin with a well-rounded features list.

Dual 10.25-inch screens for the infotainment system and instrument cluster are anticipated, along with automatic climate control, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof.

On the EV front, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality is likely to be on offer, along with flexible interior layouts to maximise cargo versatility.

Safety provisions are expected to be comprehensive, with Level 2 ADAS, six or seven airbags, and a 360-degree camera all likely inclusions.

Powertrain Based on E-GMP Platform With Fast Charging of Up to 120 kW

The HE1i is expected to ride on a modified version of Hyundai's modular E-GMP (K) platform, which also underpins the global-spec Inster EV. Battery configurations could mirror those of the Inster, which offers 42 kWh and 49 kWh packs with WLTP-certified ranges of 300 km and 355 km, respectively. India-specific battery options, however, may differ.

DC fast charging support of up to 120 kW is anticipated, enabling a 10 to 80 per cent charge in approximately 30 minutes. Hyundai plans to manufacture the HE1i primarily in India and sell it across multiple global markets. Significant localisation is expected to keep pricing competitive when it arrives in the sub-4-metre electric segment to take on the Tata Punch EV.
