Hyundai N74 To Become Worlds First Hydrogen Supercar In 2026

Hyundai N74 to Become World's First Hydrogen Supercar in 2026

Hyundai is set to make history by launching the world's first hydrogen-powered supercar, the N74, in 2026. The retro-styled super-coupe, inspired by the 1974 Pony Coupe, will enter limited production with only 200 units planned over two years. Multiple respected Korean news outlets confirmed this announcement.

Production Plans and Confirmation

In December 2023, ET News reported that 100 units of the N74 would be produced in 2026. Recently, The Korea Economic Daily and Hankyung have both reported that Hyundai plans to start mass production in June 2026, producing 100 units annually for two years. An official from a Hyundai supplier confirmed that the specifications for various components have been sent out, and the first trial vehicle, or 'T car,' will be completed by August for performance verification.

Design and Technology

The N74 will feature a combination of battery-electric (BEV) and hydrogen fuel-cell electric (FCEV) technology. The concept design, revealed in July 2022, showed drive provided exclusively to the rear wheels by axle-mounted e-motors. A 62.4kWh lithium-ion battery will handle low-speed and urban driving, while a fuel-cell stack, fed by a small hydrogen tank, will kick in at higher speeds.

Performance

The production-spec N74 is expected to develop more than 775hp (578kW), a significant increase from the concept’s 500kW, with an expected torque boost over the show car’s 900Nm. The concept has a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.0 seconds, making it competitive with high-performance EVs like the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and Tesla Model S Plaid.

Platform and Range

Based on a modified version of the Kia Stinger’s rear-drive platform, the N74 concept promised a combined driving range of over 600km. This aligns with Hyundai's goal of integrating advanced hydrogen fuel-cell technology into high-performance vehicles.

Market and Pricing

Korean media suggest the limited-edition N74 coupe, with its distinctive gullwing doors, will be priced at around 500 million won (approximately $A553,000). This price point positions it as a premium offering in the supercar segment, combining innovative hydrogen technology with high performance and exclusivity.

Hyundai's bold move into the hydrogen supercar market marks a significant step in automotive innovation, showcasing the potential of hydrogen fuel-cell technology in high-performance vehicles. The N74’s launch will likely influence the future direction of sustainable automotive technology and performance engineering.
