Porsche Involved In Pune Accident Delayed For Registration Over Pending Fees

Porsche Involved in Pune Accident Delayed for Registration Over Pending Fees

In a tragic incident that shook Pune city, a luxury Porsche Taycan car, allegedly driven by a 17-year-old, was involved in a fatal accident claiming the lives of two IT professionals. However, amidst the investigation, it has come to light that the permanent registration of the vehicle was pending since March due to non-payment of a mere ₹1,758 fee by the owner. This revelation has sparked concerns regarding the loopholes in vehicle registration processes and the enforcement of regulations governing underage driving and vehicle ownership.

Delayed Registration and Pending Fees

According to top officials of the Maharashtra transport department, the Porsche Taycan was imported in March by a dealer in Bengaluru and subsequently sent to Maharashtra on temporary registration. However, upon inspection at the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), it was discovered that certain registration fees amounting to ₹1,758 were unpaid by the owner. Despite reminders, the owner failed to complete the registration process, leaving the vehicle in a state of limbo.

Underage Driving Allegations

Adding to the complexity of the situation is the alleged involvement of a prominent builder's 17-year-old son in the accident, who the police claim was intoxicated at the time of the incident. This revelation raises questions about underage driving and parental responsibility in ensuring compliance with traffic laws and regulations. Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has stated that the teenage driver will face severe repercussions, including a ban on obtaining a driving license until the age of 25.

Stringent Action by Transport Authorities

In response to the egregious violations highlighted by the accident, the transport department has vowed to take stringent action against the owner and the driver. The vehicle's existing temporary registration will be cancelled, and it will be barred from registering at any RTO office for 12 months. Additionally, the vehicle will be impounded for a year as per provisions in the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act. Transport authorities have also emphasized their intent to register a police complaint for the violation of MV Act provisions and invoke procedures for the cancellation of temporary registration.

Government Response and Accountability

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the incident in a press conference, acknowledging the lapses in tax payment and registration procedures. He assured that if any violations are found, separate FIRs will be registered, emphasizing accountability in enforcing transportation regulations and ensuring public safety.

Conclusion

The Pune accident involving the Porsche Taycan serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of adhering to vehicle registration protocols and enforcing stringent measures against underage driving. It underscores the need for greater vigilance and accountability among vehicle owners, dealers, and regulatory authorities to prevent similar tragedies in the future. As investigations continue, stakeholders must collaborate to strengthen regulatory frameworks and prioritize road safety initiatives to protect lives and promote responsible driving behaviour.
