Honda Elevate-Based EV Confirmed for 2026 Launch
Honda Cars India is gearing up to electrify its portfolio, with its first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) set to hit the Indian market in 2026. This EV, based on the Elevate SUV, will carry a unique nameplate and design, making it distinct from its petrol-powered sibling.
This was confirmed during the launch of the new Amaze by Takuya Tsumura, The President and CEO of Honda Cars India.
The new EV is anticipated as a part of a broader strategy, as Honda plans to introduce three electrified models in 2026-27. While the Elevate-based BEV leads the charge, the other two models will either be hybrids or fully electric vehicles. This aligns with Honda’s global push to increase the ratio of electrified vehicles in its lineup.
Project ACE: Elevate’s Electric Transformation
Honda’s compact electric vehicle project, ACE (Asian Compact Electric), is the foundation for the Elevate-based EV. The ACE will be tailored for the Indian market and exported to key overseas destinations like Japan. Honda estimates 50-70% of production will cater to exports, demonstrating its global aspirations for this platform.
However, the competition will be fierce by 2026, with Tata Motors, MG, Mahindra, and other rivals already establishing themselves in the EV segment. Hyundai, Maruti, and Toyota are also expected to launch mid-size electric SUVs in 2025, making Honda’s timing critical.
Hybrids to Play a Key Role in Honda’s Future
While EVs are central to Honda’s electrification plans, the company remains committed to hybrid technology. Strong hybrids, like the Honda City, were the brand's initial step into greener mobility but didn’t achieve mass-market appeal. Honda now aims to refine its hybrid strategy, with future models combining hybrid and electric technologies to meet India’s upcoming CAFÉ 3 norms by 2027.
SUVs Take Center Stage in Honda’s Portfolio
Recognizing the growing demand for SUVs, Honda plans to expand its SUV lineup significantly by 2030, with five new models in the pipeline. Despite its recent success with the Elevate, Honda’s market share in India has declined due to reduced demand for sedans. The company acknowledges the delay in rolling out more SUV models but promises exciting updates from 2026-27, including new powertrains and vehicle models.
Honda’s renewed focus on electrification and SUVs reflects a bold strategy to reclaim its position in the competitive Indian automobile market.
