Gurugram In 23 Days 2354 Challans For Drunken Driving

Gurugram: In 23 Days, 2,354 Challans for Drunken Driving

In a rigorous crackdown on traffic violators, the Gurugram traffic police issued 2,354 challans in June for drunken driving under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act. This intensified enforcement campaign, aimed at reducing road mishaps, was conducted from June 1 to June 23.

Enforcement Drive Details

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Virendra Vij stated that the campaign was part of implementing recommendations from the district road safety committee. This committee had expressed concerns over the rising incidents of road mishaps due to alcohol-impaired driving.

To effectively execute this campaign, various traffic police teams were formed and deployed at identified locations with specific orders and instructions. During the checks, 2,354 individuals were found driving under the influence of alcohol and were issued challans. Additionally, eight vehicles were impounded during this period. In the last week alone, 637 drivers were challaned for drink-and-drive violations.

Objectives and Appeals

The main objectives of this special campaign were to crack down on drink-and-drive violations, ensure compliance with traffic rules, and make traffic movement systematic and safe. The Gurugram police have appealed to local residents to follow all traffic rules and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

Legal Framework

Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, mandates that if a breath analyzer test detects more than 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in a driver, they must be issued a challan for violating the Act.

Impounded Vehicles

In the last 10 days, the police impounded 19 vehicles, including 13 autorickshaws and six motorcycles, each with over 100 unpaid challans. Among these, three autorickshaws had the highest number of challans issued: 289, 269, and 195. One motorcycle alone had 195 unpaid challans.

This intensified enforcement campaign by the Gurugram traffic police highlights the city's efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by impaired driving.
