Citroen Basalt Vs Tata Nexon Which Compact Suv Offers The Best Value

Citroen Basalt vs Tata Nexon: Which Compact SUV Offers the Best Value?

The compact SUV segment in India is buzzing with the arrival of the new Citroen Basalt, an SUV-coupe that brings a fresh design and unique appeal to the market. But with its introductory prices aligning with those of the popular Tata Nexon, many buyers are left wondering which model offers the better value for their money. While both vehicles are compelling in their own right, they cater to different sets of needs and preferences. In this article, we delve deep into the Citroen Basalt and Tata Nexon, comparing them across various parameters such as pricing, design, dimensions, features, and powertrains, to help you make an informed decision.

Price Comparison

The Citroen Basalt enters the market with a price range of Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 13.62 lakh (ex-showroom), making it highly competitive in the compact SUV space. However, its prices overlap with the subcompact SUV segment, where the Tata Nexon reigns supreme. The Nexon is priced from Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 15.8 lakh (ex-showroom), making it more expensive at the top end compared to the Basalt.

The Nexon’s premium pricing is reflective of the additional features it offers, but the Citroen Basalt counters this with its unique design and slightly lower price tag. Ultimately, whether the extra Rs 2 lakh for the top-spec Nexon is justified depends on your priorities—features or uniqueness.

Design and Dimensions

The Citroen Basalt boasts a distinctive coupe design, setting it apart from the more conventional SUV look of the Tata Nexon. Its sloping roofline adds a sporty flair, making it an attractive choice for those who want to stand out on the road. On the other hand, the Tata Nexon, with its modern and muscular design, appeals to those looking for a more traditional SUV aesthetic.

When it comes to dimensions, the Citroen Basalt is the larger of the two. It measures 4352 mm in length, 357 mm longer than the Nexon. The Basalt also has a longer wheelbase of 2651 mm compared to the Nexon’s 2498 mm, which should translate to better rear-seat comfort and interior space. However, the Nexon is slightly wider and taller, offering a more upright and commanding stance.

In terms of practicality, the Basalt wins with its 470-litre boot, which is 88 litres larger than the Nexon’s. So, if cargo space is a priority, the Basalt is the better option.

Features and Equipment

When comparing features, the Tata Nexon pulls ahead with a longer list of equipment, particularly in its higher variants. It offers standout features such as a sunroof, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, cruise control, paddle shifters, and more. The Nexon also comes equipped with a 9-speaker JBL sound system, adding to its premium appeal.

The Citroen Basalt, while well-equipped, falls short of matching the Nexon’s feature set. It offers basics like LED headlights, a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a digital driver’s display, but it lacks some of the premium touches found in the Nexon. Notably, the Basalt does not come with a sunroof, ventilated seats, or paddle shifters, all of which are available in the Nexon.

However, the Basalt’s introductory pricing might make up for its fewer features, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers who still want a modern and stylish SUV.

Powertrain Options

The Citroen Basalt comes with two petrol engine options: a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The Nexon, on the other hand, offers more variety with both petrol and diesel options. Its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine delivers a higher output of 120 PS and 170 Nm of torque, while its 1.5-litre diesel engine offers a strong 115 PS and 260 Nm of torque.

In terms of transmission, the Nexon offers more flexibility, with a choice of manual, AMT, and DCT options. The Basalt’s NA engine, however, misses out on an automatic transmission, limiting its appeal for buyers looking for convenience.

For those who prioritize performance, especially in a diesel engine, the Nexon holds the advantage. However, the Basalt’s turbo-petrol engine still delivers decent power and should satisfy most drivers in urban and highway settings.

Verdict: Which One Should You Pick?

Choosing between the Citroen Basalt and Tata Nexon ultimately comes down to your preferences and priorities. If you’re looking for a compact SUV with a unique and sporty design, more spacious interiors, and don’t mind skipping a few high-end features, the Citroen Basalt is a great option. It also offers better boot space and a more distinctive look on the road, all at a slightly lower price.

On the other hand, if you value features like a sunroof, ventilated seats, and the flexibility of diesel and automatic options, the Tata Nexon justifies its higher price. The Nexon also comes with a solid 5-star crash test rating, adding an extra layer of reassurance when it comes to safety—a point where the Basalt has yet to prove itself.

In summary, if budget and uniqueness are your primary concerns, the Citroen Basalt is a great pick. But if you’re looking for a well-rounded, feature-loaded SUV with more powertrain options and proven safety, the Tata Nexon might be the better choice for you.
