Can you register an Olive Green car in Tamil Nadu?

We live in a country where you are allowed to paint your car with certain colors only as others symbolize your position. Well, we are talking about the Color Olive Green. What is the significance of this color? The color, “Olive Green” is reserved for defense vehicles as per Rule 121 (1) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. However, some car manufacturers have been painting their vehicles in similar shades, such as 'Robust Emerald Pearl', 'Ranger Khaki', and 'Pewter Olive', leading to objections from regional transport offices (RTOs) during registration.

A. Shanmuga Sundaram, the state transport commissioner reportedly contacted the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to inquire about the registration requirements for these kinds of vehicles. Despite this, the commissioner withdrew the request for clarification after discovering that 400 olive green cars had been registered by various RTOs. RTOs then got verbal orders to carry out these registrations.

However, owners of olive-green cars may have to repaint their vehicles or risk fines for infractions if MoRTH later orders manufacturers to stop producing cars in comparable hues. This modification needs to be authorized by the relevant RTO, updated on the car's registration card, and posted on the Vahan portal.

A Telugu actor and political leader encountered anger from the local authorities when he tried to paint his campaign van olive green. This incident has prompted transportation activist S Kamal to advocate for a common guideline regulating car colors worldwide.

While olive green automobiles can now be registered in Tamil Nadu, doing so carries a risk of fines should MoRTH eventually order automakers to discontinue making vehicles with comparable hues. For consistency and clarity, a national consistent rule about car colors is being promoted.
