April 2025 has been a mixed bag for the Indian automobile industry, with some automakers reporting phenomenal year-on-year growth while others witnessed a downturn.
The clear winners in the April 2025 automobile sales scenario were market leaders—Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor, while sales fell for Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor India.
Maruti Suzuki Maintains Its Position in the Market
Maruti Suzuki continued to strengthen its position, having recorded total sales of 179,791 units, which is a 7% increase over April 2024, when the figure stood at 168,089 units.
However, domestic passenger vehicle sales remained relatively stagnant, rising from 137,952 to 138,704 units. Demand continued to benefit from the brand's compact and utility vehicle segments.
Mahindra: More Shine with SUV Strengths
Mahindra & Mahindra has delivered rare growth, achieving a 19% increase in sales and selling out 84,170 units. The SUV segment was by far the winner, as sales of domestic SUVs rose by 28%, from 41,008 to 52,330 units! The company's continued investment in rugged, feature-rich SUVS seems to strike the right chord with buyers.
Toyota and Kia with Upsick
Toyota Kirloskar Motor increased its sales by 33% to register 27,324 units-in stark contrast to just 20,494 units a year ago. Domestic sales stood at 24,833 units, and exports added 2,491 units.
Kia India, too, prospered in growth at 18.3%, selling 23,623 units as opposed to 19,968 last April of 2024. The Sonet was the top seller with 8,068 units sold, followed by the Seltos with 6,135 units sold.
MG Windsor EV Powers MG's Growth. JSW MG Motor India registered a growth of 23% year-on-year, delivering 5,829 units in April 2025. The MG Windsor EV had a fine run, retaining its leadership status in the electric vehicle segment for the seventh month in a row.
Tata and Hyundai Hit a Speed Break. Tata Motors, despite a strong EV portfolio, slipped by 7% in domestic sales from 77,521 to 72,753 units. Passenger vehicle sales dropped to 45,199 units, including EVs. Hyundai Motor India had a 5% reduction as well, with sales totalling 60,774 units, as against 63,701 units in April 2024.
The results from April give direct clues for winners and emerging trends in the coming months as the Indian auto market cuts towards SUVs and electric mobility.
