The Uttar Pradesh government recently announced a complete waiver on road tax for hybrid cars. However, this waiver will not be applicable to all hybrid vehicles, as specific conditions are expected to be clarified soon.
Expected Clarifications
According to sources, the UP Transport Department is likely to specify that only hybrid cars costing up to Rs 20 lakh will qualify for the road tax waiver. This decision aims to ensure that luxury hybrid vehicles priced over Rs 40-50 lakh do not benefit from this incentive.
Stakeholder Consultation
The UP Transport Department recently held a consultation meeting with representatives from major automotive companies, including Mahindra Group, Toyota, Maruti, and Tata Motors. The stakeholders discussed the impact of the hybrid vehicle policy on their businesses and provided feedback to the officials.
Policy Status
Currently, there is a status quo on the policy, and road tax exemptions for hybrid cars are being granted. However, a formal clarification is being prepared for Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Uttar Pradesh to enforce the new price limit.
Industry Response
RC Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, praised the UP Government's decision to waive road tax on hybrid cars and urged other states to adopt similar measures. He emphasized the importance of promoting technologies that reduce both pollution and oil imports, advocating for incentives to support such advancements.
The UP Government’s hybrid vehicle tax waiver aims to promote environmentally friendly technologies while ensuring that the benefits are targeted toward more affordable hybrid cars. The upcoming clarification will provide detailed guidelines on the eligible price range for these incentives.
