In the first quarter of the year, the automotive industry in Türkiye saw a valuable sales rate, with overall vehicle sales surpassing 300,000 units. This shows a strong start for the automobile industry in the country.
March was a particularly important month, with sales projected to hit around 120,000 units, underlining the growing graph in the car industry. This uprise in car purchases was driven by consumers' urgency to secure vehicles before local elections. This is because, according to speculations there could be a potential monetary tightening that might result in increased loan rates.
The initial two months of 2024 displayed an impressive 41% growth in vehicle sales compared to the previous year. According to sources, a total of 186,000 vehicles were sold. This positive trajectory was hyped by passenger car sales, which increased by over 52% annually, amounting to 146,318 units. Similarly, there was a notable uptick of 9.8% in the sales of light commercial vehicles, totaling 39,343 units.
A key driver of these sales was the assumption of the rise in prices of both new and pre-owned vehicles for the remainder of the year. This prompted prospective buyers to hurry up and grab a chance at scoring a good vehicle in their budgets.
Individuals with disabilities took advantage of special consumption tax exemptions, with nearly 40% of March's car sales going to this segment. Additionally, rental companies made substantial contributions to the robust sales figures for the month.
The competitive landscape spurred car dealers to offer enticing discounts of up to 10% in light of the upcoming elections, further stimulating consumer demand. However, industry experts have varied opinions on the sector's outlook for the year. While some foresee a notable contraction in sales ranging from 30% to 35%, others, particularly representatives of Stellantis Group in Türkiye, hold a more optimistic view, projecting total vehicle sales to reach 1.1 million units throughout the year, continuing the positive trend witnessed in the automotive market.
