Tripura Government Seeks Centres Aid Amid Fuel Crisis Restrictions Imposed On Sale

Tripura Government Seeks Centre's Aid Amid Fuel Crisis, Restrictions Imposed on Sale

In response to a severe fuel crisis gripping Tripura for the past week, the State government has reached out to the Union Railway Ministry, seeking assistance in transporting essential fuel supplies. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has penned a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging immediate action to alleviate the shortage of petrol and diesel plaguing the State.

The crisis, which has led to long queues at filling stations and restrictions on fuel sales, has significantly impacted private transportation in Tripura. State officials attribute the fuel shortage to the damage incurred by a rail route in a hilly area of Assam due to landslides. Despite partial repairs, the restoration of train services remains incomplete, exacerbating the situation.

To address the crisis, the Tripura government has implemented temporary restrictions on the distribution of petrol and diesel. Two-wheelers are currently limited to purchasing a maximum of ₹200 worth of petrol per day, while four-wheelers are restricted to ₹500 per day at filling stations. These measures are expected to remain in place until normal fuel supply via the railway is restored.

In a statement released by the Chief Minister's office, Dr. Saha affirmed his personal involvement in monitoring the situation closely, expressing optimism that the crisis will be resolved in the coming days. Meanwhile, efforts to alleviate the fuel shortage are underway, with the State government seeking assistance from the Centre to expedite the transportation of essential supplies.

While the petrol and diesel crisis persists, Tripura has witnessed a brief shortage in the distribution of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). However, officials from the Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited have confirmed that CNG distribution has returned to normalcy, with sufficient stock available at filling stations across the State.

As Tripura grapples with the repercussions of the fuel crisis, the State government's proactive measures and collaboration with the Centre are crucial in ensuring the timely resolution of the situation. The State's reliance on railway transportation for fuel supply underscores the need for swift action and coordination between authorities to mitigate the adverse effects of such emergencies. Stay tuned for further updates on the evolving situation in Tripura.
