Tata Motors is gearing up for another exciting launch following the introduction of its halo product, the Curvv SUV. This time, the focus shifts to one of the brand's most popular models, the Tata Nexon, as it prepares to debut its highly anticipated CNG-powered variant. First showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo earlier this year, the Nexon CNG is expected to hit the market by the end of September, following the Curvv’s release.
Spy shots of the Nexon test mule have surfaced recently, sparking speculation that the vehicle could be the much-awaited CNG-equipped version. While there’s no direct confirmation from Tata Motors, the presence of an exhaust pipe suggests it is an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, adding to the possibility that this is indeed the Nexon CNG undergoing final tests.
What sets the Tata Nexon CNG apart is that it will be India’s first turbo-petrol CNG vehicle, a segment-first feature that promises to attract attention. The Nexon CNG will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which delivers 118bhp and 170Nm of torque in standard mode. This turbo-petrol CNG setup makes the Nexon CNG unique in the Indian automotive market.
Tata Motors isn’t stopping there. The Nexon CNG will also come with both manual and AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) gearbox options, which is another first for this segment. With CNG variants typically being manual-only, this move from Tata Motors is likely to appeal to a broader audience, offering more convenience and flexibility for urban drivers.
The CNG system in the Nexon will feature a twin-cylinder setup, offering around 230 litres of boot space. The system will also come equipped with advanced features, including an advanced ECU (Engine Control Unit), an auto-switch function between CNG and petrol, direct start in CNG mode, a modular fuel filter, and a leak detection system, enhancing both efficiency and safety.
Currently, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the only compact SUV in the Indian market offering a CNG option, making it a direct competitor to the upcoming Nexon CNG. With its turbo-petrol engine and segment-first AMT option, the Nexon CNG could give the Brezza stiff competition in the compact SUV segment.
Pricing for the Tata Nexon CNG is expected to be slightly higher than its petrol counterpart, with a premium of approximately Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1 lakh. However, the additional features and the efficiency of CNG could make it an attractive option for buyers seeking both performance and cost-effectiveness.
