Sales of electric vehicles in India skyrocketed in 2025, up around 77% from the year before.
While rivals like JSW MG and Mahindra made notable progress, Tata Motors remained at the top of the market.
Retail sales of electric cars in India reached around 176,817 units in 2025, a significant 77% increase over 2024. According to industry data, this remarkable increase is a result of expanded product offers, greater charging infrastructure nationwide, and growing consumer adoption.
Market Leaders and Quick Climbers
With 70,004 sales during the year and a slight increase of slightly more than 13%, Tata Motors maintained its leading position in the electric passenger vehicle market. Despite this leadership, the company's market share fell to slightly less than 40% in 2024 as competitors gained ground.
With 51,387 EVs delivered in 2025, a stunning increase of more than 130% from the year before, JSW MG Motor emerged as the most formidable rival to Tata's hegemony. Due to this increase, MG now controls over 30% of the market for electric vehicles.
Another notable performer was Mahindra, which saw a remarkable 369% increase in sales of electric cars to 33,513 units. This expansion was fueled by the popularity of new electric SUV models that attracted consumers.
Other Players Take Action
Other manufacturers also made significant progress, despite their lower overall volume. Sales of Hyundai's electric vehicles increased by more than six times, to 6,726 units.
While more recent entries like Tesla and VinFast saw their first significant sales in the Indian market, premium and niche brands like BYD and BMW also reported substantial double-digit gains.
What the Trend Indicates
The general upward trend indicates that Indian consumers are becoming more open to the idea of switching from conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles to electric ones. With additional models hitting the market, competitive pricing, and infrastructural expenditures, electric mobility appears destined to become even more significant in the country's automotive landscape in the years to come.
