Sub-4m SUV Sales in January 2025 – Punch, Nexon, Fronx Lead the Pack

India’s sub-4m SUV segment saw strong growth in January 2025, crossing 1.06 lakh units in sales. Tata Punch, Nexon, and Maruti Fronx dominated the charts, while Kia Sonet recorded the highest MoM growth.

India’s sub-4m SUV segment remains a highly competitive space, attracting buyers looking for feature-rich SUVs at an affordable price point. The segment witnessed a strong 15.32% year-on-year (YoY) growth in January 2025, with total sales hitting 1,06,969 units, up from 92,759 units in January 2024.

Month-on-month (MoM) growth was also impressive, with a 20.18% rise from 89,008 units in December 2024.

Tata Punch Continues to Lead

The Tata Punch (including the Punch EV) retained its top spot with 16,231 units sold, accounting for 15.17% of total segment sales. However, it witnessed a 9.72% YoY decline, selling fewer units than in January 2024. That said, it showed a 7.68% MoM increase, indicating strong demand.

Following closely, the Tata Nexon (including the EV) secured second place with 15,397 units sold, contributing 14.39% to the segment’s total sales. Nexon also saw a 10.39% YoY decline, but its 13.75% MoM growth helped it climb the rankings.

Maruti Fronx Registers Strong Growth

The Maruti Fronx emerged as the first model on the list to record positive growth in both YoY (11.35%) and MoM (41.29%) sales. With 15,192 units sold, it claimed the third position and captured 14.2% market share in the segment.

The Maruti Brezza, positioned at fourth place, saw a decline in both YoY (-3.63%) and MoM (-14.93%) sales, with 14,747 units sold. Despite the drop, it remains a strong player in the segment.

Hyundai Venue and XUV3XO Show Consistent Performance

The Hyundai Venue secured fifth place with 11,106 units sold, marking a 6.13% YoY drop but an 8.19% MoM increase. The Mahindra XUV3XO, however, stood out with an impressive 75.5% YoY growth, selling 8,454 units and gaining significant traction.

Kia Sonet Sees Massive Monthly Surge

Among all models, the Kia Sonet registered the highest MoM growth at 115.58%, selling 7,194 units in January 2025. While its YoY sales declined by 37.61%, its recent facelift and feature upgrades seem to have boosted its popularity.

Other Key Players

  • Hyundai Exter (6,068 units) and Kia Syros (5,546 units) performed steadily, with Exter witnessing a 26.26% YoY decline but a 15.14% MoM growth.

  • Toyota Taisor (2,470 units) saw a 6.01% MoM decline, while Nissan Magnite (2,404 units) improved 13.56% MoM but declined 16.03% YoY.

  • Renault Kiger (755 units) and Maruti Jimny (163 units) remained niche players, with Kiger posting a 27.1% MoM growth.

Conclusion

The sub-4m SUV segment continues to be a battleground for automakers, with Tata and Maruti dominating sales. The surge in Kia Sonet’s MoM sales and the rapid growth of Mahindra XUV3XO highlight shifting consumer preferences. With new launches and EV variants expected in the coming months, this segment will only get more competitive.
