Next Gen Bmw M3 To Get Both Ice And Ev Powertrains

Next-Gen BMW M3 to Get Both ICE and EV Powertrains

The next-generation BMW M3 is set to make waves in the automotive world with its dual powertrain offerings. Slated for release by early 2028, the iconic performance sedan will come with a straight-six turbo-petrol engine as well as an all-electric powertrain. This approach aligns with BMW’s commitment to keeping combustion engines alive while embracing electrification to cater to evolving customer demands.

ICE Power: Retaining the Iconic Straight-Six Turbo Engine

The upcoming M3 will retain the 3.0-litre straight-six twin-turbocharged engine (S58) that powers the current model. This engine is already compliant with forthcoming emissions regulations, ensuring that combustion enthusiasts can continue enjoying the raw performance BMW M cars are known for.

BMW M CEO Frank van Meel emphasized the importance of maintaining the M3's driving dynamics, saying, “We’re planning to keep up our combustion cars as well.” The ICE version of the new M3 is expected to be a heavily updated iteration of the current G80 model, incorporating design cues from BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture.

BMW M3 Goes Electric: Neue Klasse EV Platform

On the electric front, the next-gen BMW M3 will leverage the Neue Klasse platform, which is set to underpin future BMW EVs. This platform will also form the basis of the next-generation 3 Series, due next year.

The EV variant will feature a bespoke quad-motor powertrain developed by BMW M engineers. This innovative system allows full four-wheel torque vectoring, enabling unmatched precision and handling—qualities that define every M car. While the electric M3 will be heavier than its ICE counterpart due to large battery packs, BMW aims to reduce battery sizes over time as public charging infrastructure improves.

Van Meel explained, “Once you can make high-performance cars all-electric, the next question is about charging infrastructure. That’s the key question, and it’s not one a car manufacturer can answer.”

Bespoke Electric Performance

True to its heritage, the electric M3 will feature unique components crafted specifically for BMW M. While M cars have historically used reworked standard BMW engines, the same principle will apply to their electric systems. Every major component in the EV drivetrain will be tailored to deliver performance that matches or exceeds combustion-powered predecessors.

Van Meel assured, “We use the same ideas and logic for developing our high-performance engines. We are in close cooperation with BMW AG to use their bases as a foundation for M’s innovations.”

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

The dual powertrain strategy reflects BMW M’s commitment to preserving its combustion-powered legacy while leading the charge in the electric performance car segment. With the next-gen BMW M3, enthusiasts can expect the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, ensuring the iconic sedan remains a benchmark for driving pleasure in both ICE and EV forms.

As 2028 approaches, the M3 promises to set new standards in the world of high-performance cars, catering to both petrolheads and environmentally conscious drivers alike.
