Once again, Kia India is generating some excitement with their sub-4m SUV called the Syros, after a test mule was spotted testing in full-body camouflage and wearing TN registration plates.
The heavily camouflaged test mule suggests that something may be afoot at the Korean automotive manufacturer - either a Syros EV or the much-anticipated Syros X Line.
As the Syros looks to gain a stronger foothold in a very competitive segment, we wonder if there is something big up Kia's sleeve!
A Closer Look at the Camouflaged Test Mule
Automotive enthusiast Samarth Yadav may have caught the test vehicle, and while it does not give too much away, a couple of identifiers on the test car, like the 'No Photography' sticker, indicate a clear upgrade from previous versions of the car.
The exhaust outlet located at the rear of the car suggests that this might still be an ICE variant, which will likely include the 1.2L Kappa engine, however, it's also important to note that the previous electric test cars, also had dummy exhausts on them, so the Syros EV theory is still alive.
If this test mule is indeed the Syros EV, that would indicate that Kia is probably getting ready to launch competition for the Tata Nexon EV, Punch EV, and MG Windsor EV, perhaps even as soon as early 2026, which could make it Kia's most affordable electric car in India. With the rate of electric vehicles adoption, this could be a great timing for Kia.
Or Is It the Sporty Syros X Line?
It’s also possible this test mule is a taste of the Syros X Line, a sportier, more premium variant that features matte shades, blacked-out trims, and a very nice set of alloy wheels but the current prototype does not sport anything distinct to the X Line. Therefore, we’re not very confident, for now, about the X Line.
Why Kia Is Doubled Down on Syros
Even with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, the Syros has not seen particularly impressive figures in terms of sales, selling just 4,000 units in its best month, April 2025, and ranking 10th in segment with a 20.24% MoM decline. New variants like an EV variant or the X Line could help stimulate more attention and improve its sales figures.
As more spies spot the Syros in various places, we can expect more tangible updates and developments in the next few weeks. Whether it’s electrification of the lineup or making it more visually appealing, Kia seems ready to provide a jolt to the Syros nameplate.
