Mercedes Benz India Begins Production Of The All New E Class Lwb Ahead Of October Launch A Milestone In Luxury And Localization

Mercedes-Benz India Begins Production of the All-New E-Class LWB Ahead of October Launch: A Milestone in Luxury and Localization

Mercedes-Benz India has officially commenced production of the all-new E-Class Long Wheelbase (LWB) sedan at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. With this significant milestone, India becomes the sole market globally to locally produce the right-hand-drive (RHD) iteration of the E-Class LWB, underscoring the brand’s confidence in the Indian market. As Mercedes-Benz prepares for the car’s official launch on 9th October, the luxury automaker has also opened bookings for the new model, allowing eager customers to reserve their units in advance.

The E-Class has long been a symbol of refinement, luxury, and performance in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. Since its introduction in India in 1995, the model has consistently remained one of the brand’s most important offerings in the country. Now, with the upcoming LWB version, Mercedes-Benz is setting new standards for local manufacturing and customization, all while expanding its commitment to the Indian market through the 'Make in India' initiative.

Local Production

One of the most noteworthy aspects of this development is that India is now the sole market globally to produce the Long Wheelbase E-Class in its right-hand-drive form. This is a significant achievement for Mercedes-Benz India, which has been continually expanding its localization efforts to cater to the growing demand for luxury vehicles in the country. The new LWB E-Class is being produced at the brand's cutting-edge manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, which has long been recognized for its adherence to international standards of quality, digitalization, and flexibility.

Speaking on the occasion, Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Executive Director and Head of Operations at Mercedes-Benz India, said, “Mercedes-Benz started its India journey with the E-Class in 1995, and till date, it remains a key product in our local production portfolio. The start of local production of the New Long Wheelbase E-Class is an important milestone, reiterating Mercedes-Benz India’s world-class manufacturing capabilities, flexibility, and digitalization. With this new LWB E-Class, we have further deepened and expanded our localization footprint by sourcing various commodities from India, emphasizing our dedication to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.”

This move not only highlights Mercedes-Benz's confidence in the Indian market but also reflects its commitment to providing locally-manufactured, world-class luxury vehicles to Indian customers. By sourcing several components from within India, Mercedes-Benz is taking significant steps toward cost optimization while maintaining the high standards expected from a brand synonymous with luxury.

Design and Features

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB is designed to offer an unparalleled luxury experience. The long-wheelbase format ensures enhanced rear-seat comfort, catering specifically to a market that values chauffeur-driven experiences. The stretched cabin provides more legroom for rear passengers, making it one of the most spacious sedans in its segment.

Though full details of the upcoming E-Class LWB are yet to be officially revealed, one can expect a host of cutting-edge technologies and luxury features that have come to define the E-Class over the years. The model will likely include advanced driver assistance systems, a panoramic sunroof, high-end infotainment, and plush upholstery to elevate the overall in-car experience.

Powertrain Options

Under the hood, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB will be available with two engine options, both designed to deliver a balance of power and efficiency. The petrol option will be a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, capable of producing 194bhp and 320Nm of torque. This engine is expected to offer a smooth yet dynamic driving experience, well-suited for urban commutes and long highway journeys.

For those seeking more torque and fuel efficiency, Mercedes-Benz is also offering a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which churns out 197bhp and an impressive 400Nm of peak torque. Both engines will be paired with an automatic gearbox as standard, ensuring effortless driving across all terrains.

These powertrains highlight Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to offering a versatile range of engines that cater to both performance enthusiasts and those prioritizing efficiency. Whether it’s the petrol or diesel variant, drivers can expect the characteristic refinement and smoothness that the E-Class is known for, along with plenty of power to make every journey enjoyable.

Mercedes-Benz’s Localization and Make-in-India Initiative

Mercedes-Benz India’s decision to manufacture the new E-Class LWB locally in its RHD configuration reflects the company's increasing emphasis on localization. Kulkarni emphasized the importance of the 'Make in India' initiative, explaining how the company has expanded its localization footprint by sourcing a variety of commodities from Indian suppliers.

This focus on local sourcing aligns with the government’s push to promote local manufacturing, while simultaneously allowing Mercedes-Benz to offer competitively priced luxury vehicles in the Indian market. Mercedes-Benz India has proven its manufacturing prowess, not only with ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles but also with BEVs (battery electric vehicles), as part of its forward-looking strategy.

Future Prospects

The commencement of local production for the E-Class LWB is just the beginning of Mercedes-Benz’s broader strategy for the Indian market. The new LWB model is a testament to the company’s world-class manufacturing capabilities and its ability to meet the growing demand for luxury sedans in India.

With the E-Class being one of the brand’s best-selling models globally, the new long-wheelbase version is expected to further cement Mercedes-Benz’s leadership in the luxury sedan segment. The start of production ahead of the October 9 launch signals a bright future for the model, as well as for Mercedes-Benz’s overall presence in India.

Conclusion

As the countdown to the official debut of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB begins, the commencement of production marks a new milestone for the brand in India. With its blend of local manufacturing, world-class features, and versatile powertrains, the new E-Class LWB is poised to offer Indian customers an unmatched luxury experience. Mercedes-Benz continues to push the envelope, ensuring that its vehicles not only meet global standards but also cater to the specific preferences and needs of the Indian market.
