Is Your Suv Making Too Much Cabin Noise Heres How To Reduce It

Is your SUV making too much cabin noise? Here’s how to reduce it

The noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels in the Elevate were observed to be relatively high in our road test. Addressing NVH concerns in a vehicle can be a challenging task, as it involves controlling ambient noises and vibrations that are inherent in the vehicle's design. To improve NVH levels, manufacturers typically use specialized sealants and sound-deadening materials at key locations in the vehicle's structure during the manufacturing process.

Here are 6 ways you can reduce the cabin noise in your SUV

  1. Apply damping sheets to the doors and boot

In the case of the Elevate, one option to mitigate NVH issues is to apply damping sheets to the doors and boot of the vehicle. These damping sheets, which are commonly available through aftermarket audio installers, can help reduce vibrations and noise transmitted through the panels, thereby improving overall cabin refinement.

  1. Opt for tires with a quieter tread pattern

Another approach to reducing NVH levels is by opting for tires with a quieter tread pattern. For example, V-shaped unidirectional tires are known to produce less road noise compared to tires with block tread patterns. By selecting tires designed for reduced noise emissions, drivers of the Elevate could potentially experience a quieter and more comfortable driving experience.

  1. Check the exhaust system and tires

When noise intrudes into your cab, it is commonly generated from various sources like the road, wind, or your vehicle itself. The exhaust system of a vehicle is a known culprit for creating unwanted noise, and tires can also contribute to road noise. It's essential to inspect these components for any issues that may be causing excessive noise. Loose belts and fittings should also be examined and adjusted as necessary to minimize noise levels.

  1. Add noise-blocking weather seals

To combat wind noise, consider adding weather stripping to the doors and window areas of your vehicle. Weather stripping can be easily sourced online or from auto supply stores. If you notice a whistling noise originating from your outside mirrors, it is likely caused by wind passing through the lower drain holes. Using a small strip of tape can provide a quick and effective solution to this issue.

  1. Install sound-deadening panels

While many work vehicles come with built-in sound-deadening features, they may not always suffice for a quiet driving experience. Aftermarket sound-deadening panels designed for the ceiling, walls, and doors can be a valuable addition to reduce noise levels in your vehicle. Explore online resources to identify suitable sound-deadening options available for your specific vehicle model.

  1. Secure your tools and equipment

Ensure that your tools and equipment are securely stored to prevent unnecessary noise and vibrations during transit. A well-organized cargo area with optimized storage solutions not only enhances your professional image but also saves you time by keeping your equipment easily accessible and secure. Additionally, consider lining the bottom of storage drawers with inexpensive rubber or felt materials to further reduce interior noise and prevent items from shifting while driving.

While these solutions may provide some level of improvement in NVH, it is important to note that completely eliminating noise and vibrations may not be achievable through aftermarket modifications alone.

In conclusion, while addressing NVH concerns in the Elevate may require a combination of aftermarket modifications and tire selection, implementing these strategies could help enhance the overall driving comfort and cabin refinement of the vehicle.
