Hatchback Sales in India Drop by 22.92% in August 2024 – Maruti WagonR Leads the Segment

The hatchback segment in India experienced a notable decline in August 2024, with total sales dropping by 22.92% YoY to 83,129 units, compared to 1,07,844 units in August 2023. Despite the overall downturn, certain models managed to post gains, while others faced steep losses.

Top Performers and Decliners:

Maruti WagonR

The Maruti WagonR retained its position as the best-selling hatchback, with sales rising by 5.60% YoY to 16,450 units. This increase of 872 units compared to August 2023 secured WagonR a dominant 19.79% market share.

Maruti Swift

The Maruti Swift saw a sharp 31.14% YoY decline, selling 12,844 units, down from 18,653 units. Despite the drop, it held a 15.45% market share.

Maruti Baleno

The Baleno witnessed a significant 32.57% YoY decline, selling 12,485 units. Its market share dropped to 15.02%.

Maruti Alto

Alto sales declined by 11.01%, with 8,546 units sold in August 2024, capturing a 10.28% share.

Hyundai i10 NIOS

The i10 NIOS saw a 26.57% YoY drop, selling 5,365 units, down from 7,306 units.

Hyundai i20

The i20 maintained steady sales, with 4,913 units sold, reflecting a marginal YoY growth of 0.35%.

Tata Tiago

Including its electric variant, the Tiago/EV faced one of the steepest declines, with sales dropping 49.98% to 4,733 units.

Mid-Segment Performers:

Toyota Glanza

The Glanza recorded a 6.24% decline, with sales of 4,624 units, while the Maruti Celerio saw a 21.22% drop with 3,181 units sold.

Tata Altroz

Altroz experienced a steep 61.27% decline, selling just 3,031 units.

Maruti Ignis

The Ignis bucked the trend, posting a modest 3.83% YoY growth, with 2,464 units sold.

Strong Growth in the Electric Segment:

MG Comet EV

The MG Comet EV saw remarkable growth of 68.97% YoY, selling 1,100 units in August 2024.

Citroen C3

The C3 posted a staggering 102.80% growth, selling 507 units, while its electric counterpart, the eC3 EV, faced a 44.65% decline.

Struggling Models:

The Renault Kwid saw a 28.20% decline, with sales dropping to 634 units.

As the hatchback segment contends with a decline in overall demand, some models continue to dominate, while others grapple with shifting consumer preferences. The segment’s performance reflects ongoing changes in the Indian automotive market, with a rising focus on electric vehicles and evolving buyer preferences.
