Auto Industry Performance in June 2024: sales of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers soared high

The Indian Automotive Market faces rigorous and tough days amid the COVID era. It took it few years but now almost 5 years post-COVID Automotive Market has been booming than ever. In June 2024, the automotive industry saw a total production of 2,336,255 units, comprising passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles. Let’s delve into the details of this month’s domestic sales figures were notable across different vehicle categories.

Passenger Vehicles

The domestic sales of passenger vehicles in June 2024 amounted to 337,757 units. These numbers reflect a growing demand for passenger vehicles in the market. The data excludes some luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo.

Three-Wheelers

Sales of three-wheelers reached 59,544 units in June 2024. This category includes passenger carriers, goods carriers, e-rickshaws, and e-carts. The segment showed a varied performance, with passenger carriers and goods carriers experiencing significant growth, while e-rickshaws and e-carts saw declines.

Two-Wheelers

Two-wheeler sales were particularly robust, with 1,614,154 units sold in June 2024. This category includes scooters, motorcycles, and mopeds. Scooters saw the highest growth rate within this segment, indicating a strong consumer preference.

Performance: April-June 2024

Looking at the quarterly performance from April to June 2024, the total production reached 7,548,668 units, covering passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles.

Passenger Vehicles

In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25, domestic sales of passenger vehicles were 1,026,006 units. This represents a slight increase from the same period last year. Utility vehicles led the growth, showing an 18% increase, while passenger cars saw a decline of 17.5%.

Commercial Vehicles

Commercial vehicle sales totaled 224,209 units from April to June 2024. This category includes both medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) and light commercial vehicles (LCVs). M&HCVs experienced significant growth, particularly in the passenger carrier sub-segment, which grew by 52.8%.

Three-Wheelers

Sales of three-wheelers in the first quarter were 165,081 units. This represents a growth of 14.2% compared to the same period last year. Passenger carriers and goods carriers within this category saw significant increases, while e-rickshaws and e-carts experienced declines.

Two-Wheelers

The two-wheeler segment saw substantial growth with sales of 4,985,631 units, up by 20.4% from the previous year. Scooters led this growth with a 28.2% increase, followed by motorcycles and mopeds.

Insights from Industry Leaders

Mr. Vinod Aggarwal, President of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), commented on the performance of Q1 2024-25, noting growth across all vehicle segments. He highlighted the strong double-digit growth in two-wheelers and three-wheelers, with scooters showing particularly high growth. He attributed this to early signs of recovery in the entry-level two-wheeler market.

Looking ahead, Mr. Aggarwal expressed optimism for the remainder of the year, citing a positive outlook for the monsoon season and the upcoming festive season, which are expected to boost the automotive sector's performance.

Mr. Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, provided additional insights, noting that passenger vehicle sales in Q1 2024 reached an all-time high, surpassing one million units for the first time. He also pointed out the record-breaking performance in three-wheeler sales, which grew by 14.2%, and the significant growth in two-wheeler sales by 20.4%.

Detailed Sales Breakdown: June 2024 vs. June 2023

Passenger Vehicles

The total sales of passenger vehicles in June 2024 were 337,757 units, a 3% increase from June 2023. Within this category, utility vehicles showed the highest growth, indicating a shift in consumer preferences towards larger, more versatile vehicles.

Three-Wheelers

Three-wheeler sales increased by 12.3% in June 2024 compared to June 2023. The passenger carrier sub-segment grew by 18.8%, while the goods carrier sub-segment saw a 3.9% increase. However, e-rickshaw sales dropped significantly by 54.5%.

Two-Wheelers

The two-wheeler segment saw a remarkable 21.3% growth in June 2024 compared to the previous year. Scooters led the charge with a 40.1% increase in sales, followed by motorcycles at 13.4% and mopeds at 17.1%.

Quadricycles

Sales of quadricycles declined by 40.4% in June 2024 compared to June 2023, reflecting a decreased consumer interest in this niche market segment.

The data highlights significant increases in the sales of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers, driven by a strong recovery in consumer demand and favorable market conditions.
