Volvo Xc90 Facelift Revealed With Fresh Design And Upgraded Tech

Volvo XC90 Facelift Revealed with Fresh Design and Upgraded Tech

Volvo recently revealed its new XC90 facelift, giving the SUV a more refined and modern look, inspired by the design cues of its electric sibling, the EX90. The updated model features changes to its exterior styling, interior layout, and technology while continuing to offer hybrid powertrains, signaling a flexible approach towards its all-electric future.

A Fresh Look and Enhanced Features

The facelifted Volvo XC90 sports a revised exterior, adopting a sleek design language similar to the EX90 EV. The front grille is reimagined, and the signature "Thor’s hammer" headlights are even more defined, giving the SUV a sophisticated appearance. The vehicle also boasts new wheels, ranging from 20 to 22 inches, and redesigned rear lights that add to its modern aesthetics.

Inside, Volvo has made thoughtful updates to create a more premium cabin experience. The interior now has a horizontal design theme, incorporating responsibly sourced materials like Nordico and Herringbone Weave upholstery. The reshaped center console features a convenient wireless smartphone charger and a new “2+1” cup holder layout. The most notable change is the larger 11.2-inch touchscreen with higher resolution and a Google-based operating system, allowing for smoother over-the-air updates and more intuitive access to controls.

Powerful Yet Adaptable Powertrains

Despite the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs), Volvo continues to provide options for those who prefer hybrid powertrains. The XC90 facelift retains its plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid four-wheel-drive models. The top model, the T8 plug-in hybrid, combines a 310hp turbocharged petrol engine with a 145hp electric motor, offering an impressive 70 km of electric-only range. With a 14.7 kWh battery, it can charge to full capacity in about three hours using an AC fast charger.

The mild-hybrid versions, B5 and B6, are powered by a four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. The B5 offers 250hp, while the B6, with an e-supercharger, boosts power to 300hp. Both engines utilize the Miller combustion cycle for enhanced fuel efficiency, with the B5 delivering a fuel economy of 14 km per liter and the B6 at 13.5 km per liter. Volvo’s decision to continue with hybrids reflects a cautious approach toward an all-electric future, balancing the need to provide customers with diverse choices while preparing for a complete shift to electric vehicles.

Suspension and Ride Comfort Upgrades

To enhance the driving experience, Volvo has also focused on improving the XC90’s suspension system. The refreshed model comes with additional sound insulation for a quieter ride. The suspension has been reworked with a new double-wishbone setup in the front and an integral link at the rear, along with frequency-selective damping. These improvements promise better ride comfort and stability, making long drives more pleasant. The advanced air suspension system, which adjusts 500 times per second, remains an optional feature.

Market Availability and India Launch

The production of the facelifted XC90 is expected to begin later this year in various international markets, with deliveries planned before the year's end. Although Volvo has not officially announced a launch date for the Indian market, it is likely to follow soon, given the popularity of the XC90 here. Priced competitively, it will continue to compete against premium SUVs like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7 in India.

Overall, The facelifted Volvo XC90 stands as a testament to the brand's strategy to balance between current market demands and the future of mobility. While Volvo has expressed its commitment to an all-electric lineup by 2030, the inclusion of hybrids in its portfolio shows that it remains adaptable. With refreshed styling, upgraded technology, and flexible powertrains, the XC90 facelift caters to a wide range of customers, ensuring it stays relevant in a rapidly changing automotive landscape. Whether this model continues beyond 2030 remains to be seen, but for now, it offers a robust option for those who prefer a blend of luxury, efficiency, and performance.
