Mercedes E-Class to Go All-Electric in 2027

Mercedes-Benz, a German luxury automaker, is accelerating the development of its upcoming electric executive vehicle. As part of a larger EV roadmap revamp to increase appeal and catch up in the luxury electric vehicle industry, the future all-electric version of the legendary E-Class is now scheduled to make its debut in 2027. It is built on the MB.EA-M platform and is intended to restore the conventional three-box sedan look.

With the news that the all-electric E-Class would appear in 2027, Mercedes-Benz is quickening its shift to electric vehicles. This move coincides with the company's need to re-align with conventional luxury-sedan buyers and the dismal sales of its current EV vehicles.

Mercedes reportedly decided to switch the E-Class EV from the MB.EA-L (Large) architecture that was initially intended to the more production-ready MB.EA-M (Medium) platform. Mercedes can release the vehicle earlier and lower the risks involved in creating a sizable new EV platform by using this architecture.

What we currently know

Timing and platform

The MB.EA-M platform, which is the same modular architecture used in the upcoming electric GLC and C-Class, will be used in the forthcoming electric E-Class.

According to Mercedes' assessments, the decision was made in order to accelerate the model's release in weak demand.

The launch has been rescheduled from its original 2028 date to the second half of 2027.

Dimensions & design

According to spy photos of test prototypes, the electric E-Class will depart from the "one-bow" sleek shapes of previous EVs like the EQE and instead take on a more conventional three-box sedan shape.

Mercedes is said to strive for a length of about five meters, putting it in direct competition with competitors like the BMW i5.

Strategic context and significance

The underperformance of cars like the all-electric EQE is one of the main causes of this shift. According to Mercedes, consumers were less receptive to the unusual styling of previous EVs.

Mercedes intends to close the gap between legacy luxury purchasers and the adoption of electric vehicles by reverting to a sedan silhouette consistent with its ICE E-Class background. This vehicle is more than just another EV, according to industry criticism; it is an indication of Mercedes' larger move away from its unique "EQ" brand strategy and toward incorporating EVs into its major model nomenclature (C, E, S Class).

What is still unclear

Mercedes has not yet announced the electric E-Class's ultimate battery size, estimated driving range, cost, or other technical specifications. It is anticipated that several details will surface near launch.

Other queries include whether the AMG high-performance version will come next, where markets it will debut first, and how Mercedes would price it in comparison to competitors and ICE vehicles.

Soon after its worldwide premiere, Mercedes is expected to launch the electric E-Class in India, carrying on its tradition of offering flagship cars at a premium price. The decision, which offers a familiar E-Class experience with an all-electric, environmentally friendly powertrain, underlines Mercedes' urgency to expedite electrification and reestablish a connection with traditional luxury buyers.
