JSW Motors' Jaecoo J5-Based Electric SUV Caught Testing in India

JSW Motors is quietly building a formidable electric SUV line-up for India, and its latest addition is a Jaecoo J5-based model spotted testing near Pune. Heavily wrapped and clearly doing proper development work, this midsize electric SUV is shaping up as a genuine rival to the Hyundai Creta Electric. With a 60.9kWh battery, 210hp motor and a claimed range of 461km, it has the numbers to make things very interesting indeed.

  • The Jaecoo J5-based EV is the third product in JSW Motors' India line-up, joining a Jetour T2-based PHEV and an iCar V23-based electric SUV.

  • It is powered by a 210hp, 60.9kWh electric drivetrain with an NEDC-claimed range of 461km, and is expected to be priced under Rs. 20 lakh.

There is something quietly thrilling about a wrapped test mule doing development laps near Pune, and that is exactly what has been spotted recently. The vehicle in question is a prototype based on Chery's Jaecoo J5, a midsize SUV from yet another sub-brand under the vast Chery Automobile umbrella.

Despite the heavy disguise, the overall silhouette and the detailing around the tail-lamps gave away the car's identity rather convincingly. This is not a random import or a personal grey-market curiosity.

JSW Motors, which is building its own standalone automotive brand for India using rebadged Chinese vehicles, has confirmed this as the third product in its growing line-up. The other two are a Jetour T2-based plug-in hybrid SUV and a Chery iCar V23-based electric SUV. The J5 adds a third, and arguably the most competitive, arrow to that quiver.

Clean Lines, Boxy Stance and a Tech-Loaded Cabin

The Jaecoo J5 sits just under 4.4 metres in length, making it a strict five-seater that slots into the same territory as the Hyundai Creta. Internationally, it wears slim LED headlamps and tail-lamps linked by a contrasting trim strip at both ends, with 19-inch aero-optimised wheels rounding off a clean, modern look. The overall aesthetic leans minimalist and purposeful rather than showy.

Step inside and the theme carries through just as well. A large 14.8-inch vertically oriented touchscreen anchors the dashboard, while higher-specification variants bring a panoramic sunroof, powered and ventilated front seats, a 540-degree camera system, six airbags and Level 2 ADAS. For the segment and the expected price bracket, it is a genuinely well-stacked package.

210hp Motor, 60.9kWh Battery and a 461km Claimed Range

For India, JSW Motors is expected to offer only the fully electric version of the J5. The powertrain pairs a 60.9kWh battery with a front-axle motor producing 210hp and 288Nm of torque.

The NEDC-claimed range stands at 461km, the sprint from 0 to 100kph takes 7.3 seconds, and fast charging of up to around 130kW is supported in overseas markets. Some of these figures may naturally be revised for Indian conditions and homologation requirements.

CKD Assembly Planned at the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Plant

The initial plan is to assemble the J5 from CKD kits at JSW Motors' facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly known as Aurangabad. Deeper localisation could follow at a later stage, though a firm timeline on that front has not been announced yet.

A 2027 Launch Puts It Squarely Against the Creta Electric and Mahindra BE 6

A launch is not around the corner just yet. The J5-based EV is expected to arrive only after the Jetour-based model makes its debut first, placing it somewhere in 2027 at the earliest.

When it does reach showrooms, it will take on the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6 and Vinfast VF 6 head-on. With pricing expected to come in under Rs. 20 lakh, it could shape up to be one of the more compelling options in what is already a fiercely contested space.
