After years of thrilling enthusiasts with its iconic design and powerful performance, the Audi R8 has bid farewell as the last supercar rolled off the production line. Having left an indelible mark on the automotive world with its illustrious racing history and association with pop culture icons like Iron Man, the end of production marks the end of an era for the legendary model.
Originally slated to receive the final 2,000 units of MY2023, the demand for the German performance car surged unexpectedly, leading the brand to extend production by a few months. The last unit, finished in striking Vegas Yellow, boasts the formidable VIO-powered Performance Quattro Edition Coupe, delivering a staggering 621 hp (612 bhp) and revving at an impressive 8,700 rpm, with power distributed to all four wheels.
While the Audi R8's journey may be coming to an end on the production line, its legacy will live on as the final unit joins the esteemed collection of the Audi Tradition Heritage Department. From its humble beginnings with a 4.2-litre V8 engine to its evolution into the VIO powerhouse in 2009, and subsequent dominance as the sole engine choice from 2015 onwards, the R8 has continually pushed the boundaries of performance and innovation.
Notably, the R8 also made waves as Audi's first-ever rear-wheel drive car, albeit in a limited edition RWS variant. Despite the bittersweet farewell, there is no word yet on a successor to carry on the R8's storied legacy. However, rumours suggest that the brand may explore an all-electric version in the future.
As production concludes at the Bollinger Hofe plant, attention turns to the e-tron GT, which now occupies the facility alongside the Porsche Taycan, signalling Audi's commitment to electrification while bidding a fond farewell to an automotive icon.
